I only have one year of trapping under my belt and had a few questions about the basic dirt hole. Say you use a glad lure in the dirt hole, how often do you put urine on the backing? What about putting bait in the hole? Thanks for any help given..

Andy, There are as many different ways of doing a dirt hole as there are trappers, so you'll get a different answer each time you ask ;D I like to use at least 2 different smells at all my dirtholes, whether that be a bait & a lure, 2 different lures or either lure & urine or bait & urine....you really can't go wrong unless you over lure. Too much odor may tend to shy the K-9's way from the set for a few days until it "cools" down a bit. I don't use a lot of urine at my dirtholes sets, probably only at about 10% of them and then it's always off to the side, not on the backing. I use a lot of bait, probably 75% of my sets have some sort of bait down the hole and then a curiosity lure, or a curiosity lure & food lure. I don't use gland lure at dirtholes very often, more at flat or post sets, but that's just how I trap. Experiment, keep records and see what works best for you in your area as everyones is different. It's amazing how 2 trappers can use the same lure only a few miles apart and have different results but it happens. Lure & bait aren't a substitution for being on location either, as even the best lure & baits won't draw an animal for extremely long distances or if they can't smell it (wind direction...whole other discussion ;D). When you read books, watch videos or attend demo's, try and picture your own locations when they are discussing theirs....

Bait or food type lure in the hole. What I do is make a small hole or two on each side of the main hole and stick a bit of lure down that. Another point of interest. I hit the backing with urine, Wayne is correct, resist the temptation to over lure. A dab will do you. Case in point: I trapped foxes in the backyard this past year, my male dog is STILL peeing on the backing I used!!! He is hitting right on the backing. Now, his sister just goes near the "set". Just what I have seen.

I use two smells at all of my dirt holes as well. I actually never use Urine. I use either a food lure or a gland lure combined with bait and some eye appeal down the hole. That's it! Like Wayne said, everyone has there own variation, I prefer this method, only for simplicity and speed, thats it.. And, it works for me!!! I also put in a step down type set next to every dirt hole. This type of set is the same set that Ron Leggett uses. I love this set, it's easy and very effective.... Good luck!

Thanks for all the information guys. Any help is wanted. I guess the best thing I can do is just do trial and error and see what works best for my area. I just have to remeber not to over think these sets when I get out there to set my line!

Just watch video's and demos and play with it, you will start catching fox and become confident with a set, once this happens, you will be off and running.
