I'll say Utica/Rome Area for location. Area's where the water isn't lowered in winter tend to be better. Big spoons like the Doctor or Dardevil work good. There's a lure that's very hard to find called the Undulator that works incredible & probably the best route to go is using minnows. Some of the biggest pike we've caught we on medium sized minnows; But big one's often get big fish to bite. For some reason when I get ridiculous about the size of my minnows (Like using 12-16" suckers) I tend to get tiger muskies! Alot of times the tiger muskies aren't a whole lot bigger than the bait!!! They must be drawn to bigger baits at times.

Pound for pound a Smallmouth fight is hard to beat. A Pike puts up a goods fight though!!! They often jump like Small Mouth & bigger ones will tear out a lot of line. Just weather the intial bursts of energy and you got em'! Much like a largemouth...Remember Pike have razor sharp teeth and will cut through line!!! Often it is best to use a wire leader. The first pike pic in the above thread had three seperate rusty hooks in her mouth where anglers had hooked the fish but lost it. Consider heavier lines too a big 10-20lb Northern will snap too lite or old line. I like the New Hybrid lines like that FUSION stuff.
This Biggest Pike often end up being "The One that got away story" Be ready for em'

You can catch them on light line too. This one was caught on opening day while fishing for walleye in the canal at Sylvan Beach a couple years ago. Ultra light pole and 6 pound test line I get some nice walleyes & smallies behind my house in the canal every year. Haven't caught a tiger or trout in there yet, would like too though. The canal is amazing, I've caught both large & smallmouth's , northerns, walleyes, chain pickerel, crappies, perch, sunnies, catfish, carp & rockies.

ITRAP when you said you caught Catfish behind your house on the Canal; were they Channel Catfish or Bullhead? I know there are Channel Cats in the Canal that come up from Oneida Lake but I've never taken one up our way. I saw a Pic at D&D sports over in New York Mills where A Guy had caught a 60lb Lake Sturgeon at lock 22. It was Huge!
