After I had made a post on attempted mink trapping there was some interest in the safety device I use on my traps, so I thought I would post another boring 'how to'...scream when you've had enough...
I use a pair of long nosed pliers and a pair of round nosed pliers.
In this demo I am illustrating the points with 1.5mm soft glav wire, this is not the wire I use for the real thing. The real wire I use is 1mm stainless steel welding rod, good high tensile and with a lot of spring in it.
Cut 6 inches of your wire
Center it in the flat part of the jaws on the long nosed pliers
Bend the wire around the curve of the pliers until they cross over thus
Next, butt the pliers up to the little triangle and make an inward bend very shallow
Do the same to the other 'leg' so it looks similar to the picture below
Now change pliers and using the round nosed ones offer the jaws up to the 'shoulder'
Wrap first one leg then the other around the pliers, altering the position of the pliers from the outside of the wire to inside the turn
Form a circle out of the leg
Do the same with the other leg
Cut the excess wire off inside the circle
Now slip this over the jaw of the body grip either side of the trigger and squeeze on with pliers. The safety catch should rub against the front of the dog when set and unset, this tension stops the dog from lifting and the trap from firing. When taking the safety off (this can be done with one finger), the safety pushes on the nose of the dog ensuring it is settled down firmly.
Hope I haven't pissed people off with yet another 'how to', but there is very little else I can offer this brilliant forum!
All the best
