First of all just want to say im new to this site, and have trapped for 2 yrs already. This upcomming season I want to start trapping more, and am needing some tips on trapping them on land(edges of fields, fence rows, ect.), and maybe some good lures to use.

I use the common everyday 'ole dirt hole set with great results plus it gives you the advantage of picking up any fox or coyote that comes along.

Get out early and do some scouting to find coon trails and watch for road kills. This will show you where to look for trails.

I've caught more dryland 'coon with red fox gland lure & red fox urine than 'coon lures. Although when I'm targeting 'coon, I use a fishy/shellfish bait with a sweet lure. Nightowl's Plum Loco is hard to beat and I've caught them (and just about everything else that walks) on Nightowl's Chain Reaction too.

Not sure if you have tried the Griz traps but by putting a few mini marshmallows in and around them will take any coon around. I too like to add some plum loco to mix it up a bit. I'm no professional but I think I"d even eat that plum loco on my toast in the mornin!

LOL, those Lil Griz traps are a little expensive for me right now. Thanks tho. Im gonna try mixing some cherry pie filling, marshmellow fluff, and some mini marshmellows. Then some without the fluff. Are there any good baits/lures that I can make(without buying a bunch if commercial stuff) that work well for like river banks, and land sets?

You can try mixing mackeral and honey together with a little bit of corn meal to hold it all together. A bottle of 'coon lure is less than $5, probably cheaper than trying to experiment unless you want to try and make your own attractors.

Yah, im just trying to use what old stuff I can find in the house. Thanks tho. What is a good lure that is going to catch the attention of most passing furbearers? I have found some trails that a lot of diff. game use.

Great tip Wayne, I have been buying mackeral at our local dollar general for .80 a can and mixing it with bread crumbs to make small "snowballs". I think the honey idea will help keep it all together- Thanks!

my son and I spend some time catching small sunfish during the summer. We drop them in a blender and mix in some salt. This makes a strong fishy bait that doesnt freeze.

feed them what they eat, i have always used blugills and sunnys as bait for coon, alot of different concotions will work, but bluegills will always pull through for you, that suplemented with a mixture of fish, shellfish, or clam oil to pull them off thier trail will hammer the coons. you can pick up a gallon of fish oil for under 20.00, and if you use ist sparingly it will go a long way

the best coon bait ive used and made is just take some creek chubs and mince them up. put them in a jar and freeze them. take them out the first day of trapping season, and use them, but dont worry about refreezing.
then get some more creek chubs, and stuff as many as you can into a jar or whatever and let them bake in the sun. i am going to start that now so its nice and smelly by trapping season.
now when you make you coon sets, dirtholes, pockets, ect., put the minced fish in the hole, and then squirt some of that sun baked fish juice in there.
it seems they cant resist it.

One of my favorite tricks is a simple scent post set, with a fruity'er smelling lure was lure, like fermentred fruit juice, i also try to have a visual aid too, one of my favs is to drink soda while runnin the line, and use the colorful cans on sticks with some liquid comin out, caught a ton of coon like this, including my biggest, a 39lb ridge runner

After cooking and eating a pan of bacon, add an equal amount of cooking oil to the drippings, simmer and stir then pour into a squirt bottle. Use a hole set with squirt of bacon oil in it. Catches canines too.

In my area, you cant beat a dirthole with an enormous backing and some bluegills. I dont know why but that is the bait that has really worked for me.
