I sighted in my Mossberg 500/red dot combo today at the range. The groupings where deadly close! Here is the weird thing though: at 25 yards, I was right on target, maybe a bit low, so at 30 I would be right on. At 50 yards, I was about 2 to 3 inches high. This was consistent. On the box of shells (Remington super slugs), the trajectory chart say 30 yards or so should be the highest point in the trajectory before it starts to drop. Are trajectories really that different from gun to gun?

what will vary is the distance between your sighting device and the middle of the bore of the firearm. in general the closer the two are together, the better. for the most part, who cares what the box says. as long as you know what your gun does and is capable of. its good that you even took the time to find out how your equipment performs, many dont. you need to find out how far out you you can shoot before that slug drops 3 inches below your point of aim. they call this your max point blank range or something like that. meaning you can just put it in the vitals and drop the hammer up to that range. this can vary ALOT by load and barrel length and of course caliber/gauge. for instance, my 243 can go to 260 yds before it drops 3 inches below my point of aim. so use caution and figure it out at the range. looks like your on the right track. luke

Remember how u mount the long gun on your sand bags, never rest the barrel directly on sand bags use your forestock and consistently mount or lay your weapon the same each and every shot the same, remember consistency is a major key in sighting in keep every thing the same so u can eliminate one thing at a time if your coming up with eratic patterns in your groups, also at 100 yards with a shotgun if u get a 4 or 5" group I would be happy, rifled barrel or not, when made shotguns tolerences are not that tight actually theres alot of slop in them
