Ok,well here is a set that I use for k-9's that has done well for me for years. It will connect on coyote and fox that have wised up to dirt holes and post sets. Now in no way is this set perfect,it has taken me a time to perfect it to my workings. Now in the pics you will see that I did not stake this trap, reason being that you can leave that to your staking methods(I use cable stakes mainly)..Well I hope you like it and try it...And good luck...J Now in this first pick i have found my location with travel routes and wind direction in my favor.. Now I dig an hole strait down that is as wide and long as the trap that I am using(Number 2 size here)Kinda like an post hole.Make it about six inches deep with an slight dig or angle in the south end of the hole.. Next I will place an chuck of bait ( I use venison or muskrat alot)about the size of an baseball in the bottom of the hole. And will then grab some of the dirt that was removed to bury it till the hole is only about 2 inches deep ,and then stake my trp where you see the red x.. Now I will firmly bed my trap in the hole, like shown .But if you notice the loose jaw is bedded with it up on and angle (there for when the k-9 steps into the hole it is past the loose jaw)Also make sure the levers are free of debris. Now I will sift the dirt over just the hole trying to keep the matieral in only the pattern.Afterwards it should leave the lowest spot right over the pan of the trap, and any clods of dirt left over will be placed in the south end of the pattern where it will look like an digging... Now when done I will only put an small amount of urine OR an small amout of gland lure where you see the white stripe... Well there it is,My version of an buried bait set,the nice thing is after catches the bait is still there and just as easy to remake.... And here is the results....

Thanks for the info Hawken. I will try a few sets like that. Do you ever have any of the traps flipped out when the criitter tries to dig for the bait ?

Once I had a coon get one out,But the bait is directly under the pan and when they step in it is to dig and the trap locks on..The loose jaw being angled also helps make sure you have an good catch on the animal...J

I like it. It reminds me of a set in the book Traplines North. I tried it once in snow but the fox dug the trap up.

The biggest thing to learn was making sure it is bedded like a rock and that the pan is the lowest spot...

What I want to know is how do you get your traps so dark? I have tried everything from boiling them for 30 minutes to 2 hrs and I can't get them that dark. I don't know if it really matters but I would love to see them covered like yours.

LOL...I speed dip my traps.I have been for years.I rust them with an nice even coat then dip them.Personaly I think the biggest problem people have had with dip is that it is not done right.I have no prob, putting an thin even coat on my traps and when dry waxing them...thats all..

Sorry typed to fast..I wax them when they are dried.I use Andy's speed dip.I only use coleman white gas ,and I have redipped during the season, not often, cause I like to give it an good week before I know it is dried well plus I usually run into cold temps which does not help.I just try to make sure I have enough clean traps ready to swap out for the dirty ones..My mixz works well for me,,heck one trap this year pulled 7 k-9's before I pulled it...J

Thanks for the information. I am guessing from your posts you don't live too far from me. When I took my trapping course, they encouraged us to stay away from the Speed Dip due to smell but it is obvious that it doesn't affect your catches at all. I will definitely try it out next year. I guess if I dip and wax traps in the summer, there really wouldn't be an issue with scent come trapping season.

No prob on the info,Yeah when I first tried speed dip(i got it all gooey and thick..lol) took me a good season to get it just right. If you were to look at my k-9 traps and others you would think they were log wood dyed. And yeah I go thru all my k-9 traps in august. Now I have about forty k-9's this year and on years I really set,I can pull over 100 ..So I seem to be able to make the dip work for me...lol..And yeah red creek is not that far away...J

I have only been trapping for about a year now so I am trying to soak up all the information I can like a sponge. Plus I have a few students in my classes that are interested in trapping and any information I can pass of to them has been helpful as well.
I figured also with the 315, you had to be close by. Thanks again for being willing to help out. Best of luck the rest of the season.

Does your wax turn black or have a tar smell to it?I received some traps this year ,that had been dipped , i boiled and dyed em thru it the wax and i think the old dip come off in the wax .Maybe the person had dipped them wrong, what is your mixture?Good thread by the way.

JD my wax will get alittle dark, but it does that with natual dyes too.no I don't have an problem with it smelling like tar,It sounds like they were dipped with reg gas or not not allowed to dry,or well just to thick of an mixture. The biggest problem I have found is if you mix it to thick the trap may dry buy you will get thich residue in the springs that will not dry for an LONG time....My mix is done by sight,I mix with lantern gas ONLY and mix thinner then recumended.I see it as an light black to brown color ..Like I said its easier to show ,and maybe I will this summer...

I am now of the mindset, if I buy used, I ask if dipped or dyed and waxed. I don't like to buy "used" dipped traps. IMHO only, that is just for me. The ones that I did buy that were dipped, I just reversed the process and rinsed and aired out a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time and then I redid them.. Dye and wax. Really, I like boiling and waxing. I do find it fun.

Yeah traps82,I know where you are coming from, buying used traps that are dipped, could be a mess. But if I get an good enough deal on them...I will still take them..lol Boiling and log wood dye or such is fun,but for me it became an time and space issue for awhile,so nessicity made me learn how to dip right..lol

This all depends on what you trying to catch and the amount of time you have. Many guys on this forum run between 30 and 60 traps (I think). Some have over a hundred and some throw out a few sets behind the house. The more serious and more time, the more traps. Good luck!

Stopped by the forum and registered when I saw this set to make a comment/observation. The trap looks like a standard Duke 1.5/1.75? with 1 set of coil springs and factory chain?? Makes me wonder if you don't have a lot of pull outs/broken traps?? Another observation I have is that this set is a real pain to keep working as we all know the rain will start the day the traps go in the ground I myself would use a #2 minimun with four coils, offset & laminated jaws for tagetting K-9's I prefer the laminated jaws as they will hold the coons that are bound to stumble into the traps. A coon can chew all day on its toes and those jaws will hold them tight.
