I went out calling last night with a friend for the 3rd time and we never got a k 9 to answer or come in. I am just wondering what we are doing wrong. We are in areas with good populations of coyotes and fox. We were using a cotton tail distress call and his electronic caller both.

If calling for the third time at same area i would change sounds , throw in some hand calls, dont be afraid to use sporadic howling ,not too agressive howling , more of location . if your out at night just listen to the differant howls.many times they answer each other.Try a morning hunt ,dont drive to close to your calling spot, if hunting with a buddy , have 1 set up down wind of caller say 50 to 70 yards , with some cover for the critters to respond to , this works well for reds, and coyotes. They will come. if the wind is wrong skip it, dont have the breeze blowing into where you think they are looking for food.Grey fox around here are in the corn, apple orchards , and gravel banks. if you dont have greyfox pup distress ,then i would try bird sounds which work for all predators anyway.Use a redlens with your light for night hunting. How long are your stands? i call any wheres from 5 to 30 minutes and up to an hour. Coyote vocals have been working better for me right now than rabbit , try throwing in some pup distress while you are doing your rabbit calls.Another thing i do that has helped alot is set up for coyotes right before dark, dont make a sound , wait for them to sound off and group up , then move alot closer to them , using the wind to my advantage, it helps so much knowing where they are with out giving your location away . Cant prove this but i think they head into the wind or quarter it after group howling for their hunt. Try using lip squeaks and nuthing else , it carrys farther than you think . Mainly just have fun and learn , they will come.
