Amherst Police Issue Warning After Two Women Are Bit By a Fox
Two women may have to have rabies shots after both were bit by a fox Tuesday in Amherst State Park. The first incident took place around 2 P.M. when a fox ran at a woman and bit her on the shin while whe was in the park's gazebo near Reist Street. The second woman was bit around 7 P.M. when a fox jumped up on her lap while she was sitting near the park entrance on Mill Street. Police say this type of activity usually means an animal is sick with rabies or some other disease. Wednesday Amherst Police sent officers in and around the park to respond to sightings called in by residents. Around 1:30 P.M. a fox was found and destroyed on a Mill Street porch. It's not known if it was the same fox that bit either of the women. Police also don't know if the same fox bit both women. The animal was sent to Albany to be tested for rabies.Park users are being asked to be aware of any wild animal acting strangely; and children especially, should be reminded not to touch any wild animal. If anyone or their pet gets bitten by a wild animal, they are asked to call 9-1-1 or Amherst Police at 689-1311 immediately. The police will then notify the Erie County Health Department.
