ANY bodygripping trap larger than 5 1/2" set on land with the use of bait must adhere to these regulations. See below which was taken from the DEC website.......
Body-gripping traps set on land shall not be within 100 feet of a public trail except on Wildlife Management Areas.
Body-gripping traps set on land without the use of bait must be no greater than 6 inches and may only be set such that no part of the body-gripping surface is more than 8 inches above the ground.
Body-gripping traps 5 1/2 to 7 1/2 inches set with the use of bait, lure, or other attractants may only be used as follows:

for the bucket, does it matter what you use to block off the entrance? they show half the lid but I lost the lids to my 5 gallon buckets and was wondering if i could fabricate something instead?

You don't have to use the bucket lids, you can substitute

I've used the 10x10 box with 220. Taken some nice jumbo coon with it. Pain in the a to drag around boxes but the set works. Freeze proof, snow proof, rain proof, no birds taken the bait.

Does setting on public ground matter or do these regulations apply to all traps set in NY?

the regulations apply to everywhere, the concern with public land is with dogs getting into the sets mainly. could possibly be theft also

here in wis, you need to have it off the ground ( open bucket) 4' or if on the ground baited there can't be a opening greater than 50 sq " recessed 7" OR recessed 10 inches it can be 8x10"
The farmer has no cats in this shed of his and theres no Dog worries,
how does one cut the slots in the bucket - iv'e tried with a hack saw but split the plastic all to heck-

we also use the 10x10 w/220 set back in 18 in for coon and fisher. half my trappiong is done on statelands. our only problem is the bears need to wire them to a tree or heavy drag.

Now that says baited or lured, what if you set a 160 on a coon trail?

As long as the top jaw of the trap isn't more than 8" off the ground, you're legal.

The people that taught my instruction course had it so the coon could lift the lid up once his head was in and they said DEC said it was ok
