any of you folks tumble your fur after a good washing? A few years back my trapping partner and I traveled the convention circuit doing a fur handling demo. I had devised a way of using an old clothes dryer minus the heating element and hard wood saw dust . First step is to fiberglass all the holes in the drum shut so the saw dust doesn't leak out . Wash your pelts in lemon dish dertergent as it cuts the grease and oils in the hide. I would then wash them in hair conditioner for that silky feel then tumble until dry .You'll have to change the saw dust when it gets a damp feel or isn't drying proper . Is it worth it ? you'd better believe it ! Me? I'm out looking for another dryer at the moment , the old one has gone to the big fur shed in the sky or is that dump?

how many pelts can you dry at once, and how long is the drying cycle?

depending on the size of the pelt be it coons , fox or what and how much excess water you get off them . you don't want to throw soppying wet hides in there , DAMP . and remember no heat . I toss maybe two or three coons and fox in at a time and check the progress . I don't advise doing coons and fox together , one or the other at a time the coon grease from the flesh side can get on those nice silky fox pelts.

I'm working on getting another dryer over the weekend , as soon as i'm set up I'll try to do a how to including the fur. every piece of fur that goes through here is washed and tumbled , no need to worry about blood or dirt when i'm done.

Isn't this done after the fleshing and drying process? If so, why would you do 'coon that are inside out?

It can be done either way, long haired furs are tumbled when sent up North for auction whether or not you have already done them or not though. Coon can be made to look considerable better by a good washing and drying before being boarded. Quite often, blood, mud & fat and can mat down the fur and make it look flat but a good cleaning will really bring out the shine in them.
