stopped being a guide some time ago, so no offense no, but it's pretty simple, find a lake or a river with good pike , not high numbers but good forage, tupper, raquette pond, meacham, cranberry, champlain, for instance, you have a camp near chazy right? upper and lower have huge pike in them.
there are tons of forage fish there, not high high pike numbers so some will be able to get big, not just lots of stunted fish like in the saranac chain now,
then learn where to fish for them, some of the largest pike never come out of 25 feet of water or deeper except at spawning time and just after.
big BIG pike suspend off secondary points and are hard to catch as any big old fish, the next thing is finding what they want to eat, most really BIG pike are not only hunters but scavengers, they eat those in between sized fish that people catch , hook deep and throw back because they are just a little too small to bring home with pride... 6 to 8 "
a big slow moving to dead still fished bait or fly fished deep and maybe just barely crawled on the bottom might just be the thing they are looking for, and then sometimes they hit barely moving topwaters and that is where the fun is!
edges.
just like in trapping and hunting, the edges where covers meet is where predators and prey both are found in number...fish weed edges, drop offs, points, channels ( fish finders help but we caught fish before hummingbirds were around or at leat common), and then the key to it all...fish alot.
then when you catch one dont run for the dock! stay, make notes, where, when, how, then go around the lake, river or pond quickly and find the same kind of spot and fish it just like you did at the spot you nailed the big one.
when one is feeding usually they all are. most important stay safe and have fun, and try not to think about the otter and mink sign along the shore while you are after trophy pike! LOL
