I am considering a trip early next week. Has anyone heard a fishing report for the Oak Orchard area? water level?

Haven't heard a thing from the guys out west, but I heard they were hitting a few in the Salmon River a week or so ago. Probably a bunch of snow in both places, not sure though.

I am thinking about heading up this Tues and Wed. The oak Orchard area is the only area up there I am familiar with. Can anyone suggest a Salmon River area that holds fish and will not be elbow to elbow?

If you were heading to Oak Orchard you might want to try 18 mile creek below the dam in Burt, NY too. I haven't been there this year but it always has been good for winter steelies in the past. It's only about another 45 minutes west from Oak Orchard.

Thanks fellas. keep em coming. I only had one experience with the salmon river years ago on a salmon trip. It was a 'helmet and goggle' area. I couldn't believe the crowd and mind-set. Oak Orchard is no different for salmon though. I tend to limit my trips to weekdays starting in mid feb. I have had some great times all alone at Oak Orchard wading and flippin with a noodle rod. There is another spot I vaugely remember on the Genessee (I believe) just north of a power plant. I walked a goat path down to the west shore. Did well that day.

You might want to try the Genesee River or Russel station in Rochester. I have heard the river was really good for fishing. I know that several smaller streams have been producing lately. If you want more info give me a shout. Bob

Thanks Bob, I might take you up on that. Is anyone familiar with a place called 'Parma Center'? I stumbled across it years ago and took a decent fish. It is a small stream but it held fish...I think that was late though, April'ish.

My dad heard the fishing at the Burt d@mn has been good, right off of route 78 north of the town on Newfane. Years past, small to medium size buck tail jigs or I have also heard wolley buggers for you fly fishermen have been the ticket.

The western Lake Ontario Steelie program outshines the eastern end many times over.
All the rivers mentioned. Oak, Genny, 18-mile and also the 12-mile out of Wilson are winners.
The eastern end, Oswego, Big & Little Salmon are too inconsistant.
I always make a weekend out of it, stay overnight and hit them all. Much better than the hit or miss fishing in the east.
Fishing pressure is low to moderate at best this time of year, even on weekends.
Good Luck, Hope to see some pics, Dale

I've been fishing the west end of the lake for about 15 years now - and Burts never been better. Reconstruction of not only the walkway but also the stream itself have boasted better numbers than oak the last 3 falls! I usually fish burt until about 9am then move to another stream. It can get somewhat crowded at times. But for most of the year, especially now, you'll have alot of area to work and move to. Egg sacks, black wooly buggers, and pheasant tail nymph, seem to always be productive. If you google burt d@mn ny you should find a link with a layout of the work done there. They are supposed to continue around the bridge area this year. It has come a long way from what it was. Also for most stream conditions check here cattaragusflyshop.com - they will have flow clarity and fishing reports. Tight lines!

Also dont forget to check keg creek just east of burt. A pool at the bridge will normally hold fish - to see if they're in.

That brings back memories! I used to fish the Burt dam when it still had water going over it. Ever since they started generating power again it isn't the same. You're right, Keg creek is a great little stream, I remember riding my 20 inch huffy banana seat bike all the way from Newfane where i lived to fish there. Looking back on it, I don't know how I ever did it. Keg Creek used to have a great smelt run as well, haven't tried for smelt there in 25 years though, I don't think they even run there anymore. Use dto fish Johnson Creek, Thomspon Creek and 12 mile in Wilson as well.

The fishing at the burt dam has been good from what I have heard. This is right off of route 78 and is easy to find.

King 368m was right. Reports for 18 Mile are that small black or white marabou jigs are good - try fishing them below a small bobber. They say adding a wax worm is a good thing to add. Try the Slippery Sinker Bait shop (take Rt. 18 west, just over the bridge at Olcott, turn north) and it's on your right side about 100 yds north of Rt. 18) He's got bait (wax worms and spikes) and the latest information. 18 Mile is about a 30 min drive west of Oak Orchard. Keg is about 4 miles east of Olcott or about 25 minutes from the Oak on Rt. 18.
It's supposed to be VERY COLD this weekend, if you come, good luck!

Keep it simple on these stream! Black or white wooly buggers, streamers, and yes if your going to shoulder up to the dam area a mousy or wax worm will help. Almost the norm there. The best at burt for me is usually the browns following kings in the fall. The browns always seem to be much bigger there and come in big pods. And Johnson creek - well just keep this place quite. A favorite of mine if they're in. Johnson's been iffy the last 2-3 years, but I still check weekly. I think mostly due to water levels. Many fish in stream for just a short time and back out depending on water conditions. Oak Orchard fly shop (williamsville ny) usually will tell you what going on where but mostly focus on Erie tribs and the Oak.
