Anyone been to the Salmon or Oswego river recently for Steelhead w/ deer season coming to an end I'm lookin to oil up the noodle rod and hit the river. Wondering if anyone on here has had or heard of any action? I know about the Hotlines but they can sometimes be too vague.

Talked to a charter captain friend last night.......the salmon river is having a record steelhead fishery this year.
lots & lots of fresh silvers in the river right now
It's about time the east end got it's steelhead fishery back.
I noticed decent numbers on the big water this summer.....hope it's a sign of things to come

1. Lake Ontario and Tributaries ~ Warmer temperatures that soared back up into the 50s are greeting anglers for the weekend, bringing both good news and bad news. The warmer temperatures will create additional snow and ice melt for what's left on the ground and some rain is also in the forecast, meaning streams could be high and muddy - at least for a short time. However, Wes Walker at the Slippery Sinker in Olcott doesn't think more rain should be too much of a problem because the ground is already near its saturation point. He's hoping it won't make it too muddy. Mid-week conditions saw smaller streams fishable, with places like Keg, Hopkins, Four Mile and 12 Mile Creek in Wilson an option for waders. Pier casters at Olcott were put on hold when the cold blast and northerly winds combined to put more ice on them. That should be gone by the weekend so you should be able some trout by casting spoons, spinners and stickbaits. A few trout were caught at Burt Dam(18-mile creek) at mid-week. Egg sacks, jigs tipped with wax worms or any egg pattern should catch fish. As soon as the waters clear in the harbor, you should be catching some perch, too. This weekend at Bass Pro Shop in Auburn, there will be a Lake Ontario Sportfishing Showcase that will feature booths, seminars and more. It runs through Sunday afternoon. Check out www.basspro.com for details or log on to www.ilovenyfishing.com To the east, Johnson, Marsh and Sandy creeks were all fishable, but the Oak Orchard River was high and muddy according to Mike Waterhouse.

I fished Keg a few weeks ago, water was high and muddy and didnt catch anything. I did see one guy walking out with one and another catch one so they are in there. Egg sacks and spinners have taken fish as well as for the flyfishermen on here wollybuggers, gummy minnows, and medium-small streamers. Here is some fun my brother and I ahd last year:

Fish the holes, undercut banks, stumps, anywhere were there is slower water and cover.
I lost one last year that I hooked under a log, the fish was a good 10 lbs

Latest from Niagara County..... 1. Lake Ontario and Tributaries ~ Prior to the return of Old Man Winter, there were quite a few angling activities to choose from as spring arrived on the scene, if only to tease us. Perch were starting to cooperate for anglers in Wilson and Olcott harbors, according to Wes Walker at The Slippery Sinker in Olcott. Worms, minnows, grubs or a variety of plastic baits were all working. Many of the fish were smaller, in the 6 to 8 inch range. If you want to tackle something bigger, casters were picking up some brown trout off the piers on spoons and spinners. You might have to wait on that one with high winds being forecast. You'll have to stay off the big lake, too, until winds subside. Some trollers were picking up browns around Olcott and cohos west of Wilson toward Four Mile on stickbaits. Best baits have been Challenger, Bomber or Rapala makes in firetiger, fluorescent orange, gold-orange and green-fluorescent for starters. Work the mud line and seek out warmer water. The warmest we've heard has been 41-degree temperature pockets around Wilson. Burt Dam and 18 Mile Creek still has some fresh steelhead around along with an occasional brown trout. The water is stained but fishable with decent current. Keg Creek is mostly suckers right now, but there are some fresh steelhead around. Bullhead action is still hot in Wilson at night. Best baits are nightcrawlers and leeches. If you want some tips on fishing off Wilson in the spring, you'll want to attend the next Lake Ontario Trout and Salmon Association meeting in Lockport on Thursday. Capt. Mike Johannes will be talking about just that starting at 7 p.m. at Cornell Cooperative Extension Niagara. There's a fee of $5 for non-members. LOTSA will also be putting their salmon and trout pens in at the Town of Newfane Marina on Saturday starting at 9 a.m. Volunteers are welcome! Over at Oak Orchard, Ron Bierstine with Orleans Outdoor reports high, stained conditions, but there are plenty of steelhead in the river to be had. Johnson Creek is another good option to consider

I use an eight weight most of the year for steelhead and browns. But I have used a 10 weight for salmon which catches more dust these days. If your new to steelhead fishing either drift fishing with a fly rod or bobber/float fishing with a spinning setup will work fine. I mostly drift egg sacs, woolybuggers, zonkers, small crystal flash eggs, and nymphs. With sinking lines not much added weight is needed. The biggest learning curve comes from reading line to lure. Your lure is only in the fish target area for about 1/4 of your drift. The rest is lost to water drag. Float fishing (bobbers) are easy to use. Directly below the bobber add split shot to stabilize the float. Additional shot is spread along the length of line to the lure. The shot size should be very small. Throughout the fishing day your float is adjusted to presentation depth. This is a good way for the spin fisherman to use not only egg sacs but also stealhead flies. About 4yrs. ago I began using flourocarbon line. Seagar has been the best. It ties well and is much tougher than mono. Good luck!

WNY, I have alot of trouble with weak knots when I use flourocarb line. The standard fisherman's knot seems to snap with ease when I test it to make sure it's strong. Is there a special knot to use or a trick to getting good knots?

surgeons knot for connecting 2 lines (leader) and trilene knot for leader to hook. Seagars an expensive line but a spool will last years and its tough as nails.

Fished the Oswego River Today....Water was way up! Rumor has it that some of the smaller streams in the area are fishing well. The oswego was very difficult to fish at such a high level (21,500) But there was some slack water along the shorelines that was fishable. We had the place pretty much to ourselves. Maybe a handful of others came and went on the entire river.

Tried the Dougalston Salmon Run stretch today on the Salmon River. Cost 25$ to fish!!!! 1st Time ever trying it...Water was clear and up a little but not real bad. I was able to wade across the river...Didn't realize there was clear cut trails & stairways to get down steep hills. Took a good ole' tumble tryin to get down a steep hill; after reaching the bottom of hill I walked 100 yards and saw the nice convienent stairs that were built for easy access down the hill There were a good 10 guys along the shorelines & one woman went into the water and actually ducked under my line to get around me Fished a couple hours in a nice pool I found and eventually ran out of line from all the snags. No fish... Did see a guy with one on as I was driving home... He was near the bridge in the town of Pulaski... Oh; forgot to mention that I did come across a nice 6-7lb steelhead that had swam up into a shallow area and was confused on how to get out of the predicament. She was healthy as could be and not happy to see me!!

Hit the Salmon River today. Original forcast for the area was 40's & rain...But it turned out to be quite a bit warmer & plenty of sunshine!!! Great day to be outdoors! To top it off persistence finally paid off! Got a 26.5" 6lb female drifting an egg sac beneath a float...Was fishing the Ellis Cove area... Anyone interested in fishing the Salmon River Area that's looking for reports/advice there is a hotline with current updates 1-800-248-4fun
