Coonhunter, There are these books you'll see around (Wal Mart Usually has em') they say Sportsmen's Connection; spiral bound book....It has Maps in em' that cover different areas of the state. I bet If you bought the one for the area that you like to fish it could really help you catch the fish you are after. The books have alot of advice, like where to go on a lake to catch a certain kind of fish & what lure or bait to try using....It also tells you what kind of fish are in the lake. They are a littlte expensive though. I could scan a few lakes for you and send them if you tell me which ones you are looking to fish on. Just PM Me!! I think the books cost 20$ at the store.

Lake George finally has fishable ice! Finally! The main lake is frozen from the village north to Silver Bay. 3" to 5" on the main lake, you really need to be extra careful. The bays have 5" to 8" of ice. Guys are fishing the bays and the south end just off of the beach. 1" to 2" of snow on the ice. Continually making ice; 4 degrees at 6:30AM.

Fished Lake George yesterday. Everyone fishing the bays, no one out on the main lake yet. Had 5" of good ice, with patches of windswept snow. Perch were really hitting, brought home 17 nice perch. Very cold, wind out of the north, zero this morning, got to be making more ice. Those Hali jigs are dynamite on the perch!

Went out yesterday on Fourth Lake (Fulton Chain)....Ice was 12" thick!!!! Snow on top was perfect!!! Great Ice conditions! Seems as though fish are in Mid Winter Patterns even though the Ice formed so late this year. We fished a good early/late season spot & didn't get into the Lakers ....WE REALLY SET UP CAMP IN ONE LOCATION AND PLAYED THE ODDS. If we had moved around we might of got into some trout. Oh well, still nice gettin out there & the Perch were bitin'....Poor man's shrimp for supper! Any one else out on 4th??

I dug out the sled from under the Oswego County snow. Took it out on the lake about 200 yards and made a few circles just fooling around. On the way back I hit a patch of slush about 8 inches deep. Had a hell of a time digging it out. Now theres 3 inches of slush thats now ice on the skies and the tracks are packed on the inside. Got some work ahead of me now, lol. I'll keep walking out on Oneida till the slush freezes if it does at all.

Know just what you are talkin' about. It's alot of work gettin a sled outta of deep slush sometimes! Started using a 4 wheeler with CHAINS for slushy conditions & the sled when the snow is deep.

Managed to get out of the driveway yesterday. Went out on 3rd Lake (Old Forge). There was quite a bit of snow on the Ice & in many places SLUSH! Chose to go on foot and paid for it by how tired I got haulin gear In & Out. Probably same story everywhere with the slush after all the snow. Ice was a good 15-18"!! And goin through it with the hand auger was tiring. Really limited mobiltiy & motivation. Having a very slow year up to this point but did manage to pull up a decent northern. It took a dead minnow as I was pulling it up to pack up and go. I've found dead minnows can be productive, especially when fished on a windlass Tip-Up.

Anyone Heard about the New restrictions on transporting live minnows...Unless they are bought from a bait store that has minnows that were tested for VHS you cannot use minnows for bait unless they were caught out of the body of water you are fishing in. So there is no more catching minnows in the creek by your house and using them out on the lake or rivers!!!! On a better note I brought a couple guys down to Hatch Lake and they both managed to catch fish (8-10" of Ice; nice conditions on top!) Pike again on Dead minnow & windlass Tip Up; Bass on a Small jig using Vexilar

I finally made it out on Thursday. Got out about 11:00 and had t move around quite a bit. Finally I settled in my former honey hole. I was marking a few fish on the vexilar but couldn't get them to bite. Finally one did and it bent my pole right in half. 19 inch walleye. The next one took out a tone of line and snapped my line think it was a pickerale. Got a perch then quit cause I was soaking wet from the rain.
The next day (friday) I brought my girl friend with me and got into alot of small perch but got 4 keepers. Im heading out tomorrow after work in the morning.

What a beautiful day!! Too bad I have to go to bed now. I got 1 perch,1 small bass and another walleye 17 incher with help from my vexilar. Kinda funny I was watch a fish coming up to the lure and the lure dissapeared. I set the hook and got a small 8 inch bass. All the walleyes I have gotten have been in 8 feet of water. Everyone is out in 20-30 fow and I'm getting them in the shallows. Heres a pic. Sorry its from my camera phone.

Forgot to mention that I had one tip up flag go up. I went up and set the hook and had my line break. I was soo mad. but whatcha gonna do.
Rookie how do you set your hook when using a tip up?

Post by issiah on Mar 1, 2007 14:41:44 GMT -5
I don't!! Learned the hard way by having the same thing happen too many times. Not only line breaks but pull outs. I just start pulling the line up & focus on keeping it tight once I feel weight. The fish seem to hook themselves. By tight I mean not giving any slack in the line, but using your fingers as a drag by applying pressure to the line as it runs through your fingers. Nice Walleye! Looks like you've put that Vexilar to good use!! Went out on Seventh Lake yesterday Fulton Chain...1-2ft of Slush & snow on top of Ice that was 5-7". Snow & Slush mostly hard & frozen, but there is some soft spots. Would have to take caution not to Get a Snowmobile stuck! Travel on top of Ice was good for the most part. We fished a sheer bluff wall drop off, out by Island & managed to take a few small lakers. Seems like Lake Trout on Seventh are Typically Small 8-20". I have caught some really nice ones on 7th though, I think that every once in awhile a laker will have a slight growth advantage over most other (Probably Genetics) & will begin feeding on the others! I once cut open a Big Laker from 7th & found a 9" Lake Trout inside of it!! Wonder how well the forage is in the Lake? There sure is a lot of skinny fish. Look @ this one below that we caught yesterday; It sure is Skinny! Can't Beat the Solitude & Scenery though! Great Place to camp in the Warmer months too!

SpikeHorn, I forgot to mention that I switched to Trebel Hooks, Instead of using single hooks. It really helped with hook sets & not needing to yank. Also If you've never seen the in fisherman videos on Ice fishing I highly recommend it. They are full of info on using the Vexilar and the techniques to use in persuading fish to bite. They Call it the Lift Fall, Lift Fall, Hold, Jiggle Nod & it's really geared for Walleye! They're titled ICE TECH & ICE FISHING SECERETS....Trust me on this one, you'll be pumped to try the tactics after you watch it!

Thanks. I have the jigging video and just bought Ice Tech at Gander Mnt half hours ago. I have treble hooks on my lines also. I think I will run a Fireline leader instead of Mono next year. I might even stop using tip ups since all I do it was the vex now.
Yesturday was the day of dinks. Thats all I caught was many many dinks. Fished from 9-4 and they really turned on toward dark but action was steady through out the day. I might try a different part of the lake tomorrow.

Saturday sure was nice!!! Bet anyone who went out saturday had a good time reguardless if the fish were biting or not. My Brother & I went out Sunday for a Few hours weather got pretty nasty with high wind gusts. But Ice conditions were great. Like walking on the road! Most of the snow was blown off lake. We went to Hatch Lake in Madison County. Good 10+" of good Ice plus the foot of frozen stuff on top. We managed to get a Walleye! Which I didn't even know resided in Hatch It took a large dead shiner fished on a windlass Tip Up! Wire Leader; Rock Pile 30ft of Water (Just off Bottom)
