To all you who pursue game with a smoke pole, I just bought a CVA Optima. I was wondering what your experiences were with the sabots that are on the market and what you would reccomend. Right now I'm looking at going with the Powerbelt Aerotips 295 grain.
I shoot a .50 Knight Disc Extreme with 150 grains Pyrodex Pellets and a 250 grain Hornady SST. I have had excellent performance with this load yet I believe it may be overpowered but that's OK by me. I harvested a beautiful #218 dressed 10 pt. in Illinois last seson put him on a 30 yard death run. I have killed several other bucks and does with great performance.
I haven't shoot the CVA. That being said, I've shoot a lot of them over the last 34 yrs of muzzleloading. Generally, if time allows, I would purchase a small packages of relatively inexpensive but decent sabots. The hornadys or similar. Purchase a package of 250 gr bullets and 300 gr bullets. Start with 100 gr of your powder of choice. You will notice quickly which weight your gun likes. That being known you can then adjust powder, try different sabots, etc. I have been happy with the barnes saboted bullets, however, for the price it hard to beat the hornadys.
Alot of guys like using the powder pellets because their convenient. To fine tune your gun, I recommend using the powder. pyrodex is OK but fouls the gun quick. 777 powder is more expensive but is much better. I havent used Shockeys powder yet but I sell lots of it so it must be pretty good. Powerbelts and hornady sabots seem to be the 2 best sabots according to customer demand. Thomson Center sabots are very inconsistant in sabot diameter so avoid them. Start around 80 to 100 grains, shoot a few rounds. Then clean your gun and do it again. This will help you sight in easily.
I prefer to buy my bullet components seperately. Buying the prepackaged bullets is ok but I dont like the expense. I buy sabot Hornady .44 pistol bullets 300 grain in box of 100 and place them into a hornady plastic wad. I buy the wads in package of I think 50. I have a Remington inline Mod. 700 and I use the 209 primer system. I use tow 50 grain pyrodex pellets equalling 100 grains. Never a misfire using a 209 primer system. I have always wanted to experiment with other powders that are cleaner and less fowling but have not done it yet. I carry this gun alot during the regular gun season as well. I live in a shotgun only section but prefer the accuracy of my muzzleloader. Im good to 125 yards with this set up. Bullet starts to wander at 150 yards. I prefer a 50 to 75 yard shot anyway. Good luck with muzzleloading. Chub

I also just got mine this season. I sighted in at 150yrd. with the T/c shockwave 300 gr. with 100 gr. pyro. pellets.I tried the Hornady 45-250 (black sleeve) but WOW they are unbelieveably hard to get down the barrel without lube. I still use the butter on the T/C's but go alot smooter than the Hornadys. I also put the 270. barrel on for rifle season and GREAT grouping with the Hornady 230. gr. at 200yrds.
Be good as good to nature, as nature has been good to you...
