Rabid animals in the Valley Oct 02, 2007 @ 03:53 PM Observer-Dispatch The Herkimer County Public Health Department has received laboratory confirmation of rabies in two wild animals.
A rabid raccoon was removed from Oberle Road off Route 28 in the town of Herkimer after it was found attacking cats and kittens. A rabid skunk was removed from 100 Monroe Street in Ilion after attacking dogs.
There was no known human contact from either animal.
Human rabies infection usually is fatal, so extreme caution and care is necessary for possible bite victims, according to the department If you are bitten, scratched or have contact with any animal that might be rabid, immediately wash the wound with water and soap, and seek emergency medical attention. Be certain that the medical provider reports the incident to Herkimer County Public Health.

i live and trap near these areas should i be concerned or do you think that if i use gloves and etc... that i should be protected enough. or is it that you have to be bitten and or scratched to contract rabies... i know it is pretty rare to see people get rabies, but i would rather not take any chances

You should ceratinly where gloves when skinning and many recommend a face shield when skinning raccoons. I personally wear gloves but skip the face shield. You need to be careful when skinning animals that have been shot in the head because you can contract rabies by coming in contact with brain tissue. I wouldn't worry it it too much, you can go out and get pre exposure shots if you want to however.
