There are two proposed DEC reg changes that should get trapper and hunter comments.
1. A proposed reg change to eliminate the special permit required to trap fisher.
2. A proposed reg change to now require hunters to wear blaze orange.

One should read the full proposed regulations before coming to judgement. The mandatory hunter orange/pink while firearm big game hunting was very likely directly tied to the extension of hunting hours to 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset. I think many big game hunters will welcome that extra hour of hunting during "prime time". Yep, no one likes being told what they can/can't do on private property and it's likely many of those hunters will continue to wear whatever they want, but at least they get another hour of hunting. Anyways, to read the full proposed regulations changes, go HERE , scroll down, click on the "Text of proposed regulations" to read what they are expecting to change. Note the deadlines for public comment. Trapping regulatinos - proposed chages - This rulemaking is necessary to remove the requirement for trappers to obtain a special fisher trapping permit. This proposal would also remove the requirement for trappers to submit marten carcasses while maintaining the requirement for a special pine marten permit. A trapping license and pelt sealing would still be required for both fisher and marten. Deer/bear regulations - proposed changes - This rulemaking is necessary to increase antlerless harvest in specific Wildlife Management Units where needed, allow big game hunters to hunt during the entire daily period of ambient light, simplify bear hunting regulations in the Adirondacks, and enhance hunter safety while big game hunting with a firearm.

Haven't seen where the hours have been changed, not even proposed. Stupid thing to want to do IMO, real stupid.

Ahh. Got it. I wear a orange camouflage hat that I have worn 30 years or better. That’s about it. The rest is green wool pants and jacket. I only hunt the Adirondacks out my back door. I only see a few hunters a season. Southern zone hunting is a different story I reckon. Of course if your land is private, that’s another story too. My trapping tools have orange painted or taped handles. Not for safety really. I did it so I don’t leave them at a set. Getting some age on me I guess.

I don't support the 1/2 hour before and after sunset change or the mandatory color wearing. The half hour before and after just doesn't make sense to me. If it's safety their after with the orange clothing why would they want to put safety at risk with the half hour change? The half hour change sounds like something pushed by the trophy hunters just like antler restrictions. Of course with the half hour change it makes it easier to push through the mandatory orange. Can't they just leave well enough alone sometimes without bowing down to special interest groups. I hunt my own private land with nobody else around.

Are you saying you don’t stay in the woods those hours now? I think it’s a good change because it is well light enough those 1/2 hours before and after to hunt safely.

My issue is that right now opening day usually has around a 7:15 sunrise. I start hearing shots as early as 6:45. Now you back legal shooting time to 6:45, we'll probably have guys shooting at 6:15, certainly by 6:30. Overcast and its quite dark 45 mins before sunrise. If the speed limit is 55 we all do 62, if its 65 we do 72. Same concept will follow here. I'm against it.

^^^ Agreed. Sometimes when the moon is still bright we hear shots as early as 5:45AM. Pretty much EVERY day, shooting as late as TWO HOURS past sunset. ...especially my nephew-in-law... and that's another long story full of odd and disturbing details.

I get it, I just think that it’s plenty light out (normally) the 1/2 before and 1/2 hour after. If you have guys shooting 2 hours after, well no law is gonna make a difference for that crowd…….

I would have preferred the new 1/2 hour rule to apply to bowhunting only. Even though I wear flo. orange during rife season, I leave my headlamp on until it's bright enough to see clearly. Too many city, trigger happy yahoos in the woods....one of them shot my 3D deer target thinking it was a deer just before legal shooting hours.

Check this link to be sure you're wearing the proper sq inches of orange and other req's... www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/8305.html#FluorescentNext year it'll be you can hunt deer all night long but you must wear an orange jump suit.....

Don’t forget that added month in February “for the kids” who missed the holiday hunt at thanksgiving and Christmas!

Perhaps a spring break hunt?
Just in case you miss the Sept antlerless hunt, the 7 week bow season, the kids day hunt, the 4 week regular season, the 10 day muzzleload/bow season, or the holiday hunt christmas week. All of course with extended hours now.

Many Adirondack big game hunters only wear camo. New reg change requires all New York big game hunters to wear a florescent orange or pink hat, vest, or jacket. I don't like to advertise what I'm doing as a trapper, but it probably would be a good idea for trappers too.

And don't forget you MUST wear a hat or cap with the color restrictions. Don't usually wear a hat myself. Especially walking in while bow hunting. Too warm and sweaty in my opinion
