I note that DEC has established an extended bow and muzzleloader deer season in the southern zone from Dec.26 to Jan.1. I for one believe that the deer season in that area is already too long. The fact is that many trappers pull their traps prior to the opening of the season to avoid conflicts and a lot of landowners deny access during deer season to trappers. If they must open this season why are regular gun hunters excluded? For my money DEC has a dismal record of deer management in the southern zone. One year you can't get a doe permit and the next year they are handed out like candy. The land owner kill permits have been greatly abused. Just my two cents.

Regular gun hunters are excluded because they already paid for a license, but dangling this "special" season in front of others will undoubtedly lead to the $ale of more archery and muzzleloader licen$e$.
I also suspect that the snowmobile associations probably would have had a problem if they lost another week of their season.

I note that DEC has established an extended bow and muzzleloader deer season in the southern zone . That didn't go through this year, far to much opposition from mainly the snowmobile associations (landowners don't want sleds on their property during deer season) as well as trappers and small game hunters and hound hunters. Enough deer season already!

I see it posted as such on a few news sites now, in the past 12 hours. Applies to southern zone only. So now there are 3 months of deer season where I am. Great. Why not make it all firearms instead of just bow and muzzle? Oh, thats right, the state won't make $'s that way, this way they hope to sell more bow and muzzle tags. Its not deer management, its money management.

Completely agree with your guys. This seems all about extra money for DEC. Comparing the wounded animals rate after gun season vs. bow season , the last one produces much more wounded animals that obviously benefits only coyotes families to grow. It should be great to request a memorandum from DEC with full explanation about why such extension if for bowhunters and muzzleloaders guys.

It was for “the kids” who can only hunt when on break.
I can probably count on one hand the number of youths that will be out there in late season with a bow, unless maybe it’s a crossbow.
Just a ploy to sell more muzzleloader licenses. If it was about the kids and taking more deer they would have just made it a rifle season.
