Pine Marten are expanding their range in the Adirondacks, unlike fisher which are in decline in the central Adirondacks. Yes there are trappers that target them, but the catch varies from year to year.

My area in the Adirondacks has a good amount of marten. I didn’t trap any, although I tried. They were more interested in the red squirrels I caught in traps set out for them, than the beaver and rats I used for bait. I seen quite a few while deer hunting. Like I said in another post, it got pretty warm in November during trapping season. I pulled sets early this year. I wish the season was a bit longer or better yet, started later. I saw some fisher tracks near some swamps and in the snow which lasted all of a day. Always next season. All the best.

The Marten population is very good in certain areas of The ADKs. . I’m no expert but I did catch 2 this past season, and my hunting partners and myself saw many more while deer hunting. Very cool animal.
I know of several trappers that limited out not far from where I trapped.
I also caught 9 fisher on Tug Hill. With that being said, I will not set for fisher or Marten again until, the DEC stops this ridiculous permit, trapper log, jaw and carcass collection BS.. The ECO that seals my pelts tells me the freezers are full. I could sell fisher , and Marten skulls, and a local taxidermists would like to purchase Marten and mount them using freeze drier method. But with jaw and carcass collection, that is impossible.

Some still do. Thing is, there's no more financial motive, so a trapper needs to be trapping for some other incentive. And Marten trapping during November in NY (which is the only month that the season is open) involves a lot more walking than trapping other critters, or trapping Marten in December/January via snowmobile (Maine, Canada, etc). Only 20 Marten were legally trapped last year (lowest in the last 10+ years) vs 219 during the prior year.

I think the low Marten harvest last season had more to do with the heavy beechnut crop in the ADKs than lack of Marten or Marten trappers. Many Marten trappers I talked with at the Boonville FHA pick location last Jan. told me it was tough because of the beechnut.

I am in agreement with Squash and Trapperjack. In the past I have been very critical of DEC's fisher management, or lack of, in the Adirondack.DEC pick's and chooses what they want to, example being the St.Lawrence County study which proved that a later season had no adverse affect upon the population. Years ago I was asked to take part in the New York Fisher BMP program, but was told what type of traps I could use and was refused use of traps I knew would humanely take fisher. That started my attitude towards DEC. By no means do I pretend to be a wildlife biologist, but I am an experienced trapper and I resent the condescending attitude by some, not all,DEC biologists. Everything with DEC is a one way street; I have donated countless beaver meat for their studies, carcasses, and a lot of time. They refuse to listen or meet trappers halfway, just remain hell bent in justifying a college theory. How many years must New York trappers endure these log books, and skull submissions? How many thousands must they have and when is enough??? Skulls are saleable and trappers should be able to keep them. Why do trappers have to get a separate permit to trap fisher or marten? Instead they write these fancy study papers that amount to nothing. I was one of the first trappers to bring the decline of Adirondack fisher to DEC's attention, it was not they that noticed it. DEC's reaction was to shorten our season by 16 days! Worse was that they shortened it on the wrong end! They paid no attention to season dates in Pennsylvania or New England. Instead they went around patting themselves on the back about the natural expansion into western New York and the Southern Tier. So DEC decided to open a limited season in the new areas. And when did they do it? OCTOBER ! Pennsylvania runs their season in December. The fact is that fisher do not prime until mid November and the best quality comes during December. No consideration to quality is given to this resource, only words they know are "Trophy" and "Opportunity". I can understand that weather can be a factor in season dates on the tug hill plateau, but all I am asking, as does most seasoned fisher men, is a reasonable dated season. December would be best, even mid November to mid December would be a lot better, and I wonder if we will ever get our 16 stolen days back?
