Good luck, best wishes and tight chains to all my fellow hipboots hipsters for tomorrow's opening day of water season here in the southern zone NYS.
I'm going to set a modest line next couple days, loosely partnered with a long-time trapper friend as we overlap and share some lines. Heading out to Ohio Saturday morning for firearms deer next Monday. While I'm out there, gonna run a few homemade colony traps in local ditch networks for rats & mink. If the populations merit, will return in late Feb / early March 2021 to run a week of high-volume production there. Won't know until we do some test trapping in places but the fresh sign I saw in a couple ditches two weeks ago looks real promising.
I think local competition for rats in my general area will be stiff and perhaps for beaver too. No worries... this season is all about fun and camaraderie. Looking forward to sharing lines & laughs with a few different guys between tomorrow and April 7th 2021.
Let's go get 'em!

went 34 rats from 72 traps across two different neighborhood ditch networks. This year's relentless drought whacked local aquatic critters hard, well other than beavers. See them absolutely everywhere. Have farmers coming up to me and asking for their removal. Which in fact I will... for permission to hunt deer on premises Check & pull tomorrow, headed to Ohio Saturday. Will post pics from trapping here and there when time permits. Might be nearly a week, but in the immortal words of Arnold... ahhh'll be baaaaack

21 rats and 1 beaver thursday and only 8 rats today water went high thanks for all your prayers need all i can get water dropped here, and cleared up. 18 rats and 3 beaver, two yearlings and a 50ish pounder. Muskrats are scarce here as expected, a few isolated pockets but most small waters are still either drought levels or bone dry. Including most of the legendary Montezuma and also Iroquois Federal wetlands complexes.
After deer seasons end on 12/21 I'll roll out some beaver lines in every direction from home. I pry live in absolute lowest muskrat population-center of all NYS here in Livingston county, but we do have ample beaver sprinkled all over. With a season that now stretches to 4/07/2021, flattails will be the go-to target trapline species
