Does the season open on the 10th or the 25th in the southern zone this year? They were going to tell us today but the DEC hasn't changed the page.

I just got off the phone with a region 7 CO and he said due to overwhelming opposition to the loss of one week of trapping in the northern zone, you guys in the southern zone will have to wait another year for the season change. Hopefully the weather will hold out long enough to paddle a couple rivers in the southern zone after the 25th here. I do however straddle the southeastern and southern zone so I'm good either way.

If what he saying is true, that would indicate strong opposition to losing a week in the Northern zone, and full support or minimal opposition of the Nov 10 opener in the southwestern zone. The opposite of NYSTA's position. Good on DEC for listening to trappers across NY.

Sounds like another wait and see. Been waiting and seeing on this six day earlier than should be season on Fisher in the southern zone for years now. Wish the DEC would get off its ass and just make laws that make sense without prolonged studies and comment periods that go on forever

Well said Turtledale, well said. Beauracratic DEC is the problem, not NYSTA, not JTI, and not John Rockwood. The southern zone fisher season was idiotic to have it in October. The Adirondack season was shortened, ON THE WRONG END, and DEC can't seem to make up it's muskrat dates in western New York. How many years do trappers have to endure of the fisher/marten log books and skull submissions? Now they want us to submit carcasses so that we can get a dumb patch. Why do we need a "special fisher/Marten permit" ? Why did DEC have someone sneaking around to check on trigger compliance, and where is the open otter season in western New York? As for otter where is the reopening of the closed season in the Catskills and Mohawk Valley? I can understand those 3 trappers upsetment about their rat season change, but I wonder how many trappers favor it? I lost 16 days of fisher season and at the wrong end and I'm still mad as Hell at a biologist that let this happen.I know of only a couple of DEC biologists that I respect. There will be an awful pile up from the rest if ever Cuomo stops short. Butt kissers protecting their jobs . Calling John Rockwood names is wrong. There is more than one member of the JTI committee, not just John, and I would point out that in any negotiation there is give and take, and you don't always get everything you want. True, I do oppose the loss of any trapping days, but I would point out that in a state as liberal as New York the only reason that we still have trapping as we know it is because of the efforts of NYSTA, JTI, and men like John Rockwood, Dave Miller, Bob Hughes, Dave Liebig, dick Leggett, and a lot of other old farts. The truth is we don't always get everything we want, that's a fact. I have known John Rockwood for years. He is as honest as they come, a true gentleman, great trapper, smart, and no one is more dedicated to the preservation of trapping than him. He has worked hard for New York trappers even at the cost of his own health. I'll stand with John Rockwood every day.

There is no need to to change any of the trapping seasons .they were established years ago by very knowledgeable people and the have worked for years. Lets not reinvent the wheel here guys
