Walleyed, are you lined up for trapping sites until you get frozen out or do you just hit it hard first week or so ? My best yr was the first yr back at trapping in 2009. 110 spring rats out of about 1/2 mile of small creek. But that was the last yr for any sizeable catches. Same area produces no more than 20 rats now with plenty of water same corn fields along the shore. No reduction in beaver though.Able to take 6-9 every year same place.

Walleyed, are you lined up for trapping sites until you get frozen out or do you just hit it hard first week or so ? I try to trap rats until the Bad weather and Lake Seiche shut me down. I have enough spots for a while. We have one of the best rat populations I have seen since the 1980's this year. Bad weather is our biggest limiting factor.

I think he mentioned PA and OH next before Iowa. Northeast/Midwest circuit. Get in the books in four states... Illinois 6th thru 11th but I'm stopping over in Ohio for two days to meet landowners, FB friend of mine lined up a few thousand acres of private farms to hunt. Might hit that on the return trip for archery after, maybe gun seasons. TBD... one hunt at a time
I don't do "books"... the scoring system with gross and net is asinine.

Must be other areas of the state have had more water to get rat numbers up.

everyone here in the southern tier agrees that this was the overall driest year in memory... and that's going back several decades. Water trapping here when that time arrives will be spotty pockets that didn't go dry. We're gonna have our first bonafide hard freeze tonight, low 20s forecast will put skim ice on still water and prod those muskrats to begin building houses. Zero sign of any fresh houses yet, but they'll appear soon wherever rats survived. with four check days (not including today) behind you past the 25th set, Bobby... math here says you are averaging +/- 36 rats per day overall. No need to fire up any freezer space for that, can easily peel them between your regular NYSTA rant posts in here. And trapperman too... if you aren't banned for life from there. Boco misses you already

Today was pull day on Salmon River Estuary, and it was a bit nippy on the water with a 15 mph northeast wind and 30* air temperature.
Looks like everyone else pulled yesterday as not a tally flag could be spotted along the cattail lined Islands.
When the last trap & stake was hauled aboard walleyed's canoe, we had 21 rats in the tote.
Ran some errands in Fish City (Pulaski) and then headed for the Skinner Creek Estuary to yank the traps there.
Halfway thru the traps, walleyed spied a orange topped tally stake dragged up inside the cattail line up ahead.
As we approached close enough for walleyed's star-nosed-mole-like eyesight to assess the crime scene, walleyed found nothing but skull, skin, and bits of flesh clinging to the #160.
Robbed by either a coon, or a mink.
The distance up into the cattail cover the perpetrator had hauled the trap & stake said coon to the investigator.
Just 10 yards down the creek, walleyed changed his mind as the next #160 held an enormous Buck mink clamped nicely behind the coconut with his furry tail undulating in the current.
The mink's stomach was freakishly distended no doubt with a whole muskrat stuffed inside.
When the last trap was aboard the canoe, the tally was just 7 rats and the Giant Buck mink.
So the catch total for today was 28 Muskrat plus the bonus mink.
Today's catch is now drying before the fans, and walleyed is relaxing with feet up.
Tomorrow we'll skin, and then perhaps set another spot if there are any unset locations left to trap.
Muskrat trappers seem to be everywhere.
You would think the d@mn things are worth something ?
stay tuned.

walleyed got all the rats & 1 mink skinned yesterday.
Now dealing with 4 open wounds on two hands that are somewhat infected.
This the result of setting & re-setting 134 #160's again & again for three trap checks. It hurts.
We are happy we didn't set any new trap locations as today there is high wind & waves predominating on Eastern Lake Ontario that would have been hell to work with while checking traps.
Tomorrow is supposed to be very naughty weather wise so it's another day I wouldn't want to be out & exposed to the Eastern Lake Ontario weather and Lake Seiche.
November 1st and as if on Que, the typical bad weather pattern has reared it's ugly head.
No sane trapper would consider being out checking or setting traps in these weather condition.
The Fur Fairy left walleyed another seven raccoon Friday night.
We'd Better get the skinning knives sharpened up.
Stay Tuned.

Yeah, weather not looking good. We're supposed to get 6 - 12 inches of snow here tonight thru tomorrow. I still haven't set a trap. Waited out all the rain, now the snow. Targeting wed here. No hurry this year.
How the coons looking Bob....still a bit blue or shaping up?

after this brief little two-day cool spell, forecast calls for 60s F daily highs straight thru for a week or more. Just like last season and many others, that final week of October is gnarly but the first half if not all month of November warms right up. Put some old fashioned Bag Balm on those hands... heal 'em right up. No one has worse hands than old dairy farmers, by far.

Got back in the water today when we set Stony Creek. Wind was blowing 25MPH out of the Southwest so we only got to set areas out of the wind. The water was cloudy and impossible to see into in most of the wind thrashed creek estuary. Hopefully it will be calm in the morning and the water clear and we can set the rest of the creek. Picked up a huge road-killed coon and skun him off. Bet it's worth at least $4.00 put-up. We're in the money now. LOL w

Thought I was in the movie: Ground Hog Day when we got to Stony Creek this morning.
Dead Flat calm when we pushed the canoe away from the boat ramp and started to check the few traps we set yesterday.
Headed upstream 1st to check the sets above the launch and before we could point the canoe down stream the wind came up fast and furious from the southwest.
We got into a new section downstream, and as the water was not yet muddied up, we were able to string a bit more steel and got another 15 sets out before we were not able to fight the velocity of the wind roaring up the creek.
When we got back to the boat launch, we had 10 nice plump muskrat riding with us.
Seems like every where else this fall, there is a very nice group of rats inhabiting Stony Creek estuary.
Wish the wind would hold off so we can get set, string the necessary steel, and skim off the surplus rat population, and move on.
Stay tuned.

Trapping in the Stony Creek wind tunnel continued this morning as the southwest wind continued unabated.
In spite of the fact I had more traps out the catch was very sparse with only 2 rats.
I can't imagine the wind kept them from moving but other than a couple snapped traps, we should have had at least a dozen this morning.
We set another 13 traps at what looked like slam dunk spots but that's what we thought yesterday.
wondering if somebody sucked the gravy off Stony Creek on opening week and cleared out before we got there.
Stay Tuned.

Never mind, he was. Too bad. His muskrat thread was the only entertaining thread on here, and I know many enjoyed it. Some people can't take the heat, and they instead find a way to bury it. Good old fashioned censorship. Ah well, gonna be quiet here.
