This Saturday at 9AM is the NYSTA B.O.D. meeting at the Herkimer County Fairgrounds in Frankfort, N.Y.
If you have concerns about the Season Change Proposal and NYSTA's support for it, you may want to attend the meeting.

Went to the B.O.D. meeting Saturday in Herkimer.
It's about a 2.5 hour drive for me.
The JTI chair gave a brief synopsis of the
Season Change Proposal and the Official JTI Response
sent to DEC Bureau of Wildlife.
The JTI Chair claimed there was "MINUSCULE OPPOSITION" to the Season Change Proposal by the NYSTA membership that he contacted.
The JTI Chair claimed he expects to see the Season Change Proposal to once again appear in the New York State Register either on November 4th or 11th.
Not sure if they will provide another comment period.
Walleyed left during lunch after a majority of the officers & directors left the room for about a half hour.
It was interesting to attend the meeting, and hear the various comments by directors and officers.
It was an assembled collection of aged geriatric patients with an average age of well over 60.
Several of the old geezers nodded off during the meeting and started snoring & snorting as they napped.
Without some young blood,
trappers as a demographic is doomed.
Other than Officers, Directors, & County Reps,
walleyed did not see any other Members in attendance.

Wow. Quite the report. I guess those "old geezers" had more gumption than you, they stayed for the entire meeting.
Hopefully some young blood will be less judgmental and respectful of the fact that the "old geezers" were willing to serve and keep the association going when the younger folks were too busy with twittergrambook to come help keep a past time we ALL enjoy going in New York State.
I missed the meeting and getting to meet you in person by two days, as I am typing this in the airport in Detroit.

At least I showed up to see what kind of a meeting was being run. walleyed

If it were not for those "Old Geezers" you would not be trapping today.

If it were not for those "Old Geezers" you would not be trapping today. Where were you AL ? Home taking a nap ? I wore my chin covering mask into the meeting BLDG and realized that I was about the only one wearing a face covering. Good call not showing up to avoid the Covid as there was no room for social distancing, and most 95% did not wear masks. Governor Cuomo would have had a stroke !!! walleyed

So were their any action items as a result of the meeting? Other than the season change issue were any discussions started regarding membership communication? Who snores the loudest?

If you want to find out what went on, Mac, Come to the meeting !!!! Officers discussed Gambling Gamba, The NYSTA website, treasury issues, By-law changes, filled Officer, Director, County Rep vacancies, fund raising, scholarships, Flea market report, Trappers Camp, etc. No discussion on membership communication while I was there but I left at approximately 1:00PM. There was discussion on issues with several former NYSTA volunteers who had resigned. Mostly pretty, dry run of the mill stuff associated with running an organization. I was surprised you weren't there, Mac. walleyed

Bob, had I known you were going I might have although I am pushing 65 and may have just joined the slumber party... It's about a 4 hour drive, meaning leaving at 5am at the latest, up at 3:30 as I need a gallon of coffee to even change my clothes..... If I was a rep or officer, well then, I'd make the effort. I am concerned however regarding no social distancing and nobody wearing masks, as I am a compromised person since I had cancer and a geezer. With old geezers there, I am surprised there wasn't more consideration. Thanks for the summation of the meeting.

That is exactly why I did not attend the meeting. Too many people are not taking the Covid seriously enough. I am 82 years old with some health issues, in the high risk category. I am definitely an old geezer. I no longer attend meetings of other organizations for the same reason. I do compliment you Bob, for making the effort to attend, and hopefully express your concerns. I did talk with Jim Carmody last week and he told me that there are some with no regard for the covid precautions. That is why I avoided the "flea market". I spent the day in the Adirondacks pre baiting my fisher line, enjoying the colorful leaves, and capping it off with a wonderful dinner in Newcomb.

I am not a native born Adirondacker; I moved here 54 years ago. I have a genuine love of these mountains and have many, many memories of places that I have hunted and trapped. The beauty of these mountains never ceases to thrill me. Yes, I'm getting old and I've slowed down some, but I'll be darned if I will give in to sitting in a rocker every day. Overall, the good Lord has been kind to me, and as long as I'm able I intend to keep on trapping. These days I mainly chase fisher, mink, and otter, with a beaver or two thrown in. I love the birds, smell of the autumn forest, and the call of a loon. People need to take time and enjoy life, get out of the rat race a bit. I also like to eat.I enjoy seafood, Italian, and a good steak; basics like a bacon and tomato sandwich, am not into wraps and Mexican stuff. These days I carry water bottles everywhere I go, and know where most every clean fresh water spring is located. I love the smell of woodsmoke or fresh balsam. Yes, I intend to enjoy myself with the time I have left. P.S. If you ever get up to Newcomb the Lake Harris house is a great place to eat, but make a reservation before you go.

Glad you're still at it(trapping)and enjoying life! I've aquired a taste for that "mexican" stuff, the food in the north is a mixture of the indian and spainish culture a lot different than even that which is in southern New Mexico. I've aquired a taste for Elk and Lion, trapping is still the most enjoyable thing I've ever done always a challenge.
It's a good time to be a trapper!

This is the problem with these forums, you read only what is written without body language and inflection of the voice, it is easy to read hostility/disrespect into a post where none was intended. I am a sarcastic SOB, it is hard to convey my sarcasm on forums, I really have to work at it.

A quick glance at the NYSTA officers & board of directors tells me that we are a dying breed trying to cope with a rapidly changing playing field but still clinging to our old ways. I see a group of guys doing the best they can with the situations they are dealt but totally inflexible to new ideas or differences of opinion. If we are not open to new ideas, then we are doomed to be overtaken by forces we can not control. Too small a group of NYSTA people making decisions affecting a much larger group of trappers but being totally inflexible to the opinions of their membership will doom this organization. walleyed

Mr. Walleyed, What you seen at the meeting is all that basically ever shows up. Yup, I am one of the old geezers that nods off since I usually work the night before and have to go back to work after the meeting on Saturday nights. If it were not for Jim Carmody driving so that I can snooze for the 1.5 hr ride back and forth, I would not be going to the meetings.

When I went to my first BOD meeting years ago one of the things that stood out to me on that January day with the weather not so good that day was these old guys all made it here to the meeting. I was one of the younger guys at the meeting They were a dedicated bunch that was for sure. Today it is much the same and it is not just with NYSTA. County Federation Houndsmen SCOPE meetings are all the same. Next to none under the age of 50. It is like the younger don’t seem to care enough to get involved

I even see it at fire dept drills & meetings. I have been in the VFD for 42 yrs and yes we do get younger guys to join but not like when I was 18-20. Seems like the younger crowd has no time except for themselves. Only problem with that is living in a community that has all volunteer ambulance and firefighters. Somebody has to donate their time and the ones that do not still more than likely would want to know why somebody did not show up in their time of need.

You had some younger ones get involved, and then driven away. You've been invisible to members with lack of communication, how would anyone know how to get involved? You've appointed persons vs openly seeking nominations. The old crew is in place because that's who you wanted in place.
If you want younger people involved, then ask yourselves how and what do you need to do to accomplish that. Whining about it accomplishes nothing.
