A pet peeve of mine is that I am noticing that more and more DEC is stocking brown trout in traditional brook trout waters in the Adirondacks. I don't know who dreamed this up, but I'm opposed to it. Years ago DEC stocked Lake George with rainbow trout and the fishing was wonderful. Then someone said it was not cost effective and they switched to landlock salmon. That quickly went down hill. In order to save the salmon fishery they stopped the netting of rainbow smelt. Every time DEC gets involved they foul things up!

I always head to the backwater ponds near me after ice out and before close of season for brookies. This past late Spring I fished my 2 favorite ponds. I spin and fly. I stay a few days with my dog and tent. I use barbless hooks and release most if not all my fish gently and quickly. I will keep a nice one for dinner, but only one. I caught a number of last years and this years brown stockers this Spring at the first pond. I only caught 3 brookies. I fished for 3 days at one location and moved to another. Pack canoe makes it easy. I was surprised at the next pond that I only caught 1 brookies. I always catch upward of a half dozen or better a day. I know fishing has good days and bad. I been fishing these ponds since I was a boy and over the past few years have noticed a definite decline in the brookies. I only saw 1 other fisher at these ponds and she wasn’t catching much of anything. She said she caught some browns is all.
