Its so dry here, our county is one in the drought watch stage. The streams out hete are so low, the rains the past couple days did nothing. Couple beaver swamps near me I checked out this week are so low despite the dams still intact as the water is not flowing. Beaver moved out even though still plenty of food available, just no water to sustain them. My pond depends on runoff and a stream that drains the state land I border. Dry stream, no runoff, my pond is a puddle. Its full of golden shiners and their backs are sticking out of the water. Kingfishers and herons are getting fat. Never seen the pond like this in the 12 years I've been here. I should be flyfishing for steelhead right now, but they can't get out of the mouths at the lake. I will say that the autumn colors down here right now are fantastic, coming a bit early this year due to distressed trees.

Every drop had been sucked right into the ground, mercifully so. The Genesee River remains a wide swath of exposed rocks with tiny ribbons of water snaking thru. There are some ditches and flows that held water all summer, they will likely be chock full of bitten-up rats come season.

Just finished replacing springs, welding j hooks, and tuning my traps. Ready to dye them. Our season is still a month and a half out here in Kansas. Ed

Just finished up prepping traps yesterday. Went old school with sumac bark I stripped this winter. Use it for all legholds and some conis. Other conis I went with Rust-Oleum spray paint. Bait and lures are all made up aged and ready.
