The eastern basin of Lake Ontario, its tributaries, Oneida Lake, etc......arguably one of the Top Five fisheries in the US, and maybe beyond.... From native brookies, to all the salmon and trout in the lake, to giant smallmouths and walleyes, perch through the ice, and the next World Record Musky in the St Lawrence.....heck, we even have Europeans come here to have giant carp tournaments! While I don't take advantage of the fishing opportunities that I used to, it's right here for the taking. I hang around with FAR more fish guys locally than trapping guys.....heck, I'm about the only redneck I know that doesn't fish weekly. MZ ... and next record walleye to come from Chaumont Bay region in late Feb - early March real soon. Could be anyone who lands it... even me!
all of my outdoor friends here are either stream fish addicts, bass tourney veterans, deer hunting addicts or some combination of all. None of my local friends trap any more or have any further interest in trapping at all. Nearest friends of mine who trap are coni and flatiron... both old AF now too. Pry be able to buy all their steel on the cheap real soon

Thanks for posting this, Dino. I'm not on their lists but am going to check out the website. I just got my license(s) yesterday, dingbat cashier was under qualified to be doing license sales. Anyhow, that's another story. Got both DMPs I requested, now I hope I can get enough time to fill all tags. Hey, a guy can dream, right?!

Anyone else notice what a confusing, repetitive/redundant mess the 2020-2021 Hunting & Trapping "Official Guide" is? Cuckoo COVID-compliant?

Do you really think so or is just another one of your pipe dreams I still got another 20 years ago haven't you killed enough Montezuma muskrats in your life? It's time to set up a nice hammock by your wood stove, stay warm in the winter. Lay around and eat all that roast turkey and homemade pie, all those fine meals you got down there.
Bobby & I are gonna bid your old unit this year, team up on that when ice gets thick enough to hold us both. We'll text you pictures of the catches... stay tuned to our Facebook pages this season!

Austin, if you didn't ban me from your facebook group for doing the same thing that Bob does on this forum I may have invited you out on my boat for a day filled with catching Bass, Walleye and Perch. don't take it personal... I delete everyone who is rude and anti-social from my FB page. See, that's why FB has eviscerated all these message boards. Individual control over content. Even the once mighty trapperman is now a mere shell with maybe three dozen (at most) addict posters and 90% of the prior audience gone. All of them are now on FB, actively posting btw.

I didn't take it personal, now that I thought about it I left on my own. There are some really good trapping groups where you can speak your opinions and not get bullied by the administrators who always have to have the last word. I was and I still am right about the NYSTA and I see that many people on here feel the same way I do.It was a different group that I was banned from for asking Gamba where my money went. I only enjoy a few outdoor groups on Facebook, I get sick of the political crap and I really don't care what anybody else is doing nowadays. Tman has become an echo chamber for paranoid conspiresy theorists and most of the members there are an embarresment to the trapping community. My kid got his hunting license and bow permit this year so I am looking forward to him bagging his first deer because my property is being overrun due to nobody hunting my land the last few years.

So, to get back to the original subject of this post, it looks like the changes did not take effect this year? The syllabus still shows a Nov 25 opener for water trapping in western NY.

Yes, BUT - there's the caveat about it still being unsettled, "There are pending regulations to revise mink, muskrat, & beaver season dates. Check the DEC website for final season dates before going afield."

Walleyed spoke to several NYSTA B.O.D. officials at the Herkimer Trapper's flea Market yesterday regarding the DEC,Bureau of Wildlife proposal to change mink, muskrat, and beaver season dates. Most knew nothing about it, or said they missed the meetings when the proposal was discussed. walleyed then spoke briefly with JTI chairman rockwood who seemed to know everything about the proposal. rockwood claimed the proposal was posted on the NYSTA site long before the It was listed in the state register on June 3rd. rockwood claimed "a DEC employee" erroneously/wrongly posted the proposal in the NYS Register long before they had intended to either by accident or error. rockwood stated un-apologetically that NYSTA supported the proposal in it's entirety, and added that (I) shouldn't be trapping muskrat in October anyway. rockwood claimed a majority of trappers have been asking for a common opener for many years. rockwood claimed a majority of trappers have been demanding a later season opener for all species for years. rockwood never mentioned wether the B.O.D had bothered to poll the NYSTA membership regarding their preferences or their opinions on this subject. There you have it fellow trappers. Sounds like a unilateral decision on the part of the B.O.D. and/or the JTI chair without consulting the membership regarding this very important rule change. Not happy !!! walleyed

Well I decided to purchase my licenses via the call in new "Super Dooper" decal system. I called on the second day that they were on sale. Getting through was an experience in itself, but I finally got through. Must say that the man I spoke with was not the sharpest tack in the drawer. I purchased hunting, fishing, and trapping licenses, plus the doe permits. I've waited and finally the envelope from DEC arrived this week.Inside were my two DMP carcasses tags and nothing else. Todate I have not received any licenses. Typical DEC operation. Fortunately I saved the confirmation number, but it is very typical of DEC. Now I wonder where my licenses are and how I can apply for my fisher permit. Next thing you know we will be required to get a separate muskrat or mink permit. Last year DMP's were scarce, this byear they are a dime a dozen. Wonderful wildlife management?
Regarding Walleyed's comments, I did support him when he requested public comments.I felt his management unit was a unique situation and should be treated as such. Some bean counter created all of these WMU's,but fail to take unique situations into account. Tug Hill is a prime example. However I know John Rockwood, JTI members, and Board members did not screw anyone.Everyone has the right to comment., I purposely hold off setting traps for certain species until I know they are prime. DEC is truly at fault regarding this. Their comments of "public opportunity" and "Trophy" are not justified. Furbearers should be harvested in most cases when they are prime. How can you justify an October fisher season when just across the border in Pennsylvania their season is short, but when the fur is prime. In the central Adirondacks DEC shortened the fisher season, but on the wrong end! Fur primeness was never considered, determined by an arrogant biologist that thinks he knows everything.

In regards to Walleyes post...doesn't surprise me, that's the way its been being run for quite a while now. Send your dues and shut up, we'll decide whats good for you. I think there are some good people there, but I wonder who is making all the decisions. I don't understand how one person or a couple perhaps can speak for an entire organization. Supposed to be representing trappers, not themselves. There was never a post on the website, it was down. Only post there was when the comment period was closed. Only post on FB was days after the comment period opened, which it sounds like the decision was already made by then. Makes you feel foolish for taking the time to comment.
I'd like to help out where I could, maybe down here in 9S like Bill had mentioned, but not at all if things stay as they are.

Looks like Our Hero has once again pivoted to a totally revamped business model involved elsewhere. Stay Tuned Fellow Trappers !!!!

Imma spend this winter when it's cold and gray and sucks outside, prowling the west for final decision on my next legal residence. When you are snowed in, frozen in and bored (wh)itless inside your compound.
But before and after that, we got water critters to tag-team. You ready for the all-world partnership we're fixin' to unleash on those north country $3 muskrats?

well Bobby, I got a bow license for Illinois, a blackpowder license for Missouri on semi-guided whitetail hunts, and plans to visit Denver and Vegas when snow flies. On both ends of all that, I got time for some $2.75 NYS xxxl select muskrats and $5 GWF green beavers. Come join the hammertime if you wish. Front or back of canoe, your choice

I may have shot over my limit on blue grouse and light geese, that's about it.
Might make Colorado my residence, dunno. They have weekly 1,000 table gun shows in each big city, no silly handgun permits bullshart and a opportunities for growing income streams. Along with 360 days annual of sunshine. What's not to like?
