Looking for the info ( realistic) about how to kill a trapped animal that is still alive. Ideally a beaver, otter or a muskrat should be dead upon checking traps. What to do with a fisher, coyote, fox , raccoon ? How to handle their euthanasia ? I live in Brooklyn, NY, so to buy a pistol is my dream only - impossible. What else can you suggest ? No single youtube video shows how trappers "handle" such situation.

Generally not openly discussed in a public forum, for hopefully obvious reasons (i.e., trolls have eyes too lol).

Generally not openly discussed in a public forum, for hopefully obvious reasons (i.e., trolls have eyes too lol). Looks very strange for me. At zillion movies a general public can see how one human kills another one or the entire squad . There are different methods of killing humans shown openly as well a general public can find movies where vampires suck blood or a primitive tribe member is eating fresh killed human flesh. Same time trappers are too shy to show the entire process of "fur making" . You can watch any part of the trapping recreation activity including skinning an animal, but the part of how a trapped alive fox became a fox hanging at somebody's garage preparing for skinning is always missing. Why? I want to know how to handle such situation, how to that in more "human" way. I don't care about trolls or shmols . Such scenes where a soldier kills another soldier is permitted, but how to "handle" trapped and still alive animal is prohibited. Hypocrisy?

I'd suggest a read of forum rules, it's in there somewhere along with prohibiting discussions of non-target catches, etc. I do know what you mean and mostly agree. There's nothing preventing anyone from asking via private message or the like. In fact I'll send you one right now.

Think about it - the movie types you mentioned: How many people shed a tear? But let LASSIE fall down a well, everybody's sobbing, and TIMMY gets the blame lol!!!

brooklynbeaver, I sent you a private message last week, did you get it? How mush more season have you got to go down there? Land trapping here ends 2/15, mink/muskrat/beaver goes until 4/7/20. I wish I had more water to trap!

As I have stated initially this is my first season of trapping. Here in Region 3 I see no lack of public waters to trap otters, beavers, muskrats, coyote and even fisher . 3 weeks ago somebody stole my 6 Duke 330 + 2 metal stands and it was a very negative surprise for me. That was a big loss for me in monetary value and in time to carry on and install them through 4" ice. Well, I learn from my own experience and Youtube. Though Youtube videos show only successful stories and I cannot understand about the success rate ( how many traps should be installed to get one beaver for sure). Many tiny secrets are not coming for free and I know about that. So with such freaking Region 3 winter temperature when I do install traps through the ice and the next 2 days a rain and 50F washes out all ice and all my trap stands become not walking accessible - that's a pain. Because not all public waters do accept a floating device or the distance between your vehicle and the swamp is about 1.5 miles away of terrain road and to carry on even a small kayak is merely impossible. That's seems a problem to me. That's why since now I'm gonna pay more attention on beaver dams catching strategy and again I have to find enough anchors to be ready to settle my pawholders traps.

Brooklynbeaver sorry about your traps most all of us have been there unfortunately that does come with the territory.setting traps is kind of like loaning out money never loan more than you can afford to loose.
Trapping conditions can change rapidly in ny I really don’t play out on the ice much 90% of my catches have been within reach of the shore unless open water is available without major freeze in the future forecast.
As far as bait goes you can’t go wrong with popular
If you ever were up for the drive I would have no problem showing you some very helpful tips I’m out of 7m area it’s about 3-4 hr drive
Best of luck Charlie

Thank you Charlie, yeah we all are learning on own blisters. But 7 M is really far away and I hope till the end of 2020 season I'm gonna learn enough. Spring is coming and more and more open water became available. I can see beavers exit'entrances from/to a swamp and just waiting the temperature raise because the major beaver feeding activity stays pretty much close to their houses - I can see the amount of freshly cut branches stored under the water 2-3 feet from their houses., so they don't need to go on a shore.
Again thank you for the acceptance to be my mentor and may be sometimes we are definitely gonna meet at 7M
