Hi Bill,
Thanks for reporting on the auction results.
It is much appreciated to get some info on the market.
That is the 1st substantial report of any
New York State Fur Auction this season.
How many buyers were present and who were they.
Thanks in advance for the information.

Some of the better prices I've seen from local auctions especially when you factor in 50% green.

I guess I don't understand the secrecy surrounding fur buyers at these auctions. I mean, they ARE in business to buy our fur at these In-Country auctions. Knowing who the buyers are at an auction is a critical part of knowing WHENand WHERE to market our wild fur. For sure this secrecy doesn't help the trappers of the New York State achieve the best prices for their pelts IMHO. w

Anti's don't generally go to the auctions, but they DO monitor trapping and other sites including this one. I for one would NOT want my property, my livelihood, my family or even at the extreme, my life, jeopardized by some ultimate whacko nut job "saving the planet" by ending me or mine because they were able to find out my name and/or personal information. The prospect of a few more bucks in my pocket because of free advertising would not be worth it to me when offset by the potentially significant increased exposure to risk. It's getting worse and worse in some areas. But that's just my take on it, as stated above.

Well then,
Let's all just hide under a rock, and hide everything we do
because of some imaginary wackjob, domestic, Eco-terrorist.
Pretty soon nobody will believe there are any trappers left,
so our NYS Democratic Controlled Assembly, Senate, and Governor
can just eliminate trapping and fur buyers/sales in
New York State because we don't exist anyway.
The threatened fur sales ban in New York City,
Los Angeles, and the State of California
are just the handwriting on the wall if we all go into hiding.
good luck with that guys.

C'mon Bob, you're not going to lose trapping rights because a couple fur buyers are not named for a fur sale. You may lose them because less than 10% of licensed trappers in the state support NYSTA and its the same in other states as well as NTA. Think big picture. Furthermore, they didn't say they did not want their names on social media, Bill felt he did not have the right to do so, I respect that.

No, we won't lose trapping rights over information blackouts with Our In-country fur auctions where we hope to market our fur. But if we are going to run scared, and hide under rocks, and are ashamed of what we do, we are doomed as a demographic anyway. This goes right back to the public perception debate. If we trappers can't justify what we do for financial gain, wildlife management, food, or green, sustainable, renewable-resource fur products then trapping for sport and killing animals strictly for fun won't cut it with the general public. w

Your name, date of birth, social security number, address, mother's maiden name, name of first pet, name of high school, year graduated, blood type, passwords and everything else splattered all over the anti sites? I know, I know, and I wasn't using the number of posts for bragging rights, but yeah you already know that. Bob, I just remember the days when it was posted here that anti's were trolling this and other sites and were copying posts to fan the flames on anti sites, that's my only point I was trying to make. I don't hide the fact that I'm a trapper, but for dealers/buyers I can see the sense in erring on the side of caution. It IS tremendously more crazy today than it was even a few years ago; I remember back when I first started trapping, it was a badge of honor. Even the "cool kids" were impressed lol! Today? Meh, I still hold my head high about it, but seems it's like when a woodchuck stands upright when you whistle to get a better shot lol. There's no question they ARE out to shut us down, and I'm not afraid of a fight, but it's like this "new breed" of anti's have no qualms about going whole-hog violent, as long as they've got a keyboard to hide behind; but, SOME are not above actually carrying out the violence.

Forgetting anti's and such, I DO agree that there's less fur sale information shared here than in the past. It seems, if my memory serves me right, the day after the sale or shortly thereafter, someone from THAT club would usually post the results. That seems to no longer be the norm....
Not complaining, just sayin'......my sense, like ALL things related to this topic, it gets down to a shortage of helping hands. There's really NO reason to NOT post sale results.....buyers' names is a separate subject and arguable as to value knowing.....
I guess, for ME, I don't really focus on the number of buyers and their names thereof......I have NOT drawn any conclusions about fur prices and the number of buyers and names thereof and how that results in averages......
Flat Iron is different, to me, as it has ONE buyer.....and that is their business (the seller and buyer) to report....its like a traveling buyer (Boardman, Groenwald) If you sell fur at the Flat Iron, to ME, its the same as selling to one of them and it gets down to the INDIVIDUAL deciding if they want to share that info.....
At Herkimer, Ballston Spa, Pompey et al, I think it DOES give us a bit a barometer on what's going on with prices, and to me, fur volumes (is anyone trapping???)
My three cents..........................

Speaking for myself, I don't hide that I'm a trapper. You pull into my complex and you immediately know a trapper(s) lives here. Scary times right now, what happened in CA, new bills introduced here as well as other states which is a piling on what happened in CA..low fur prices keeping new trappers and old from participating which leads to weakening in the ranks, etc. First time in over 50 years of trapping I fear the direction things are going.

Plenty of trappers posting an endless amount of info and pics on FaceBook... trappers aren't hiding anything from anyone anywhere.
Around 2011 or so I sold several hundred rats at GVTA where one of a dozen buyers there looked at me and immediately started ranting about Trapperman.com and how everything will be on tman including pics and fur prices, etc. He was disparaging the whole thing by obvious tone of voice and stated he better not be in any pics posted online. I was taken aback by the whole thing and momentarily, speechless... which doesn't happen often. So it's not a stretch to assume those guys don't want personal info public. fwiw sold all rats put up on wood that year for $11+ avg. Good times, long gone.
A friend of mine showed up at the Honeyoe sale with cash and semi-interested in buying, but the amount of fur was so low it wasn't of interest to him. imo there are fewer reports lately because fur volume thru is low. Seems like a bulk of what used to flow thru auctions now hits the route trucks and/or traveling buyers. Not to mention a fraction of fur actually produced than what was just a few years ago.

MZ Looking at averages of say, muskrat. Certain buyers are aggressive in buying muskrat, and If you see a very low or very high average for rats, knowing who was, or was not there bidding on rats helps explain the end results. Or take coyote or grey fox. High prices for those species in excessive of their raw fur market value can be explained by knowing which buyer was bidding on fur destined for the Internet trade. Knowing the buyers present helps explain the end results, and can sometimes help predict what may, or may not happen at the next upcoming auction. All in my opinion, of course. w

Nobody wants to get lowballed on their fur and then pay a 10% tax to a trapping club. I found a buyer that pays good for green frozen rats and I sold him 300 for a $4.00 nose count and then put up the remaining 57 which I sold 50 of to Groeny and kept 7 to tan when I get some time off.
