My son Colton and I have been taking trapping trips up to Northern NY for many years...due to his school commitments (including SATs this past weekend), he was not able to join me on this years trip. On our first trip we built a large cubby in hopes to catch a bobcat...we set a trap there each year specifically for a bobcat, and each year we came up empty handed...but not empty minded as each year we learned more and more about bobcats. Well this morning all the perseverance paid off!!! I only wish Colton could have been there with me...as silly as it sounds, brings a tear to my eye...bitter sweet

I hear you. My son is now almost 17, just got his license and a new girlfriend. Hate to see them grow up, but also awesome to see the great people they are becoming. Congrats on the cat!! I’m sure Colton was happy too.

Congrats, Dino! And I figure Colton experienced a similar response.

Sorry to hear Colton wasn't there to catch that cat with but guessing he's still pretty proud!

Colton is with me in spirit and gets a live play by play! Despite his absence and help, I have been successful on my little stint...over a five day period I have a boar coon, a big male fisher, one bobcat, four coyote (double today), a porky, and an unprime muskrat. Besides the critters above, one of my other highlights was seeing a family of 5-6 otters watching me from only a few yards away make a K9 set...they were very photogenic and let me get some great videos! The ponds are (were) stocked with fish and the property owner wants them (the otters) out. I have zero experience trapping otter but would love to add one to my fur collection. After seeing them on day one, I have not seen them since.

Teachable moment for Momma... "THAT, kids, is a 'TRAPPER.' You know, (whispers) - what happened to Daddy. And those things he's using to make noise, we STAY AWAY FROM THEM!!! So take a good look, always remember, and NEVER COME BACK TO THIS SPOT IF YOU SMELL HUMANS!!!" Good luck, just use a STRONG trap, anchored well or a drowning set, I don't think there's any creature smaller than a grizzly bear that fights as much or is as hard on traps as are otters.

My son was never really interested but my daughter would like to go on the beaver line. She also would check the two coyote traps on the atv in the back field for me. Hopefully my almost 2 yr old grandson will be interested. I plan on getting him a couple of havahart traps and making some coffee can live traps for him when he turns about 4. let him set them around the woods and then have them let them go at the stone wall next to the house and maybe get to befriend them with peanuts and peanut butter.
