Agreed. Weather like this in October, in NY? BONUS!!! I tell ya, the things we see when we don't have a camera... this afternoon after I got back from a doctor's trip to Syracuse for one of my grandsons, I changed clothes and headed to the farm to check traps. High up on the hill along a stone wall running through the woods is a cubby for fisher, I put a whole grey squirrel in the back for bait. My cubbies have a hole drilled through top and bottom near the back for the rebar/stake to go through to secure the trap chain and the cubby (pretty much like everyone's, I know I know...) The squirrel was behind the rebar. ANYWAYS... I get to that set, and there's noises coming from the front of the cubby, I'm approaching from the rear. I'm thinking I've got a fisher but it wasn't a quick kill, so I hurry up so I can humanely dispatch it. Then, just a few feet from the set, I hear >SNAP!<, then a high pitched sort of whistle-scream, and I see an ermine (not all white yet) jump back away from the set. I stopped to see what was what, then the ermine went back to the set and more of the same kind of noise I heard at first. So, I figure I'll either have an ermine if I'm fast enough (no one ever is lol), or I'll spook it and it'll run off. It ran off. I laughed so hard when I saw that the SQUIRREL was in the 155, sideways, and had been chewed on. As near as I can figure it, the ermine went into the cubby but was too small to fire the trap, started eating the squirrel, then decided to take it somewhere else and as it dragged it out of the cubby the body of the squirrel fired the trap and spoiled the ermine's plans. Then I came along and that was the end of the meal. Other than that, zip zero nada. The End.

Another nice day! Looks like thats going to be ending and Thursday looks like heavy rans coming, as well as winds into Friday. Picked up two reds today, had intentions of getting another dozen or so sets in but todays run showed me that time wise this was going to be it for running before work next three days, but did manage to squeeze in another 4 sets, just be a little late for work...

Charlie, I'm using smugmug, got a 14 day trial, when that runs out I'll look for something else. Used to use imageshack or tinypic, both gone....gobbled up by photobucket.

Picked up a couple more reds and a nice yote this morning, happy with the steady drip. Took me longer than anticipated to check, got to work a bit late..oh well. Calm before the storm today, tomorrow should be a different story out there. I trap amongst the windmills, so I'll probably feel it Friday...But the front should get the critters moving.

I have 2 cats lurking on my property and with lower prices I may as well get one mounted if I can catch one of them. Nobody traps around me so they are mine if I can lure them in. So a nice prime one would be nice on the wall. Will wait a couple of weeks to set.

Thanks for the comments guys... First set a red today, thought it was a good sign. Nope, blanked the rest of the way through. Pulled in a few sets today that I know will be tough to get back to tomorrow after the monsoon today...up to 2 inches here they say. Gonna enjoy skinning my last dry red today...

I did the same. Caught one large boar coon and pulled a bunch that I figured I can’t get to tomorrow. Still have about 20 sets out but plan on getting in a bow stand all next week. Wish all the things I love doing didn’t all happen at the same time!

Well we weathered the storm! Critters moved a bit last night, put 2 yotes and a red in the truck today. Didn't do the remakes due to time and conditions, will fix tomorrow when off. Pulled a couple more today that have been quiet and a drive to get to. First snow today!

Nice! I picked up a red and another coon. Can’t seem to make contact with a coyote. Spent the evening in a deer stand, man it was cold with that wind!

Got my first fisher of the season today. Actually, other than the possum lol, my first anything for the season! Big male, cubby with a 160. 3 other cubbies with 155's were sprung, nothing in them, judging from the size of this male his head was too big for the 155's at the other 3 along his line of travel (over 3/4 mile of stone wall) that he came to first, at least that's my guess. No matter, he's on the scoreboard. But what a mess getting the load ticks off it. Mud ball, must've been caught just before the 4" of rain came down last night. Flooding everywhere. That ermine saga might be over for now, until I put out some weasel boxes. The other day, somehow it finally worked the squirrel out of the cubby without springing the 155. Rebaited with beaver meat. Don't laugh, the set that took the fisher today (same location has caught fisher before) was baited with grape pomace, the stuff that you get after pressing wine grapes. I'm making a lot of wine (reds and whites) this year from our wine grapes. Maybe something for the lure makers to add lol, "Fisher Wine." Darn shame though, really not prime. Mostly blue on the belly and legs, back looks pretty good. "Trophy" my keister!!!

Way to stay at it Tony. Am hoping to get into one of my stands this weekend for the evenings, rut should be swinging into motion here. Starting to see more rubs and a couple scrapes. I'll run a small trapline through the week next week, but may concentrate on deer the following..weather dependant. Supposed to get up to 6 inches of snow here tomorrow night into Sunday.

Repeat of yesterday, 2 yotes and a red again. After 7 checks I've got 7 yotes and 7 reds, usually by this time the reds outnumber the yotes 4 to 1. Things have changed. Pulled some more sets in today and only left 12 out, those are tripped as tomorrow one of the kids is giving us grandchild #11, induced at 7:30 am, so a busy day. Probably won't get things set up again until Monday. Mid canine season break.. This dog from this morning is the second from this location, new location this year, huge hay field between two large woodlots that is featureless except for this shallow ditch that is usually dry, runs woodlot to woodlot..this set being about halfway through. Nice travel lane..

Well, I'll take the slow and steady drip, as long as it continues lol. Got a nice female coyote at the double dirt hole with the chain slide-away today. Not a mud ball at all. Skinned but ran out of time so not fleshed yet. Unbelievable the ticks on things this year. What I've found for killing the ticks is something I learned over the past few summers - I grow 14 different varieties of wine grapes. Some do not tolerate certain types of insecticides or fungicides, and the Japanese beetles are horrible and they prefer grapes above all else. So, I have to resort to hand-picking them. I take a cutoff milk jug and half fill it with water and a little bit of Dawn* dish detergent, they drown in the solution because the soapy water make them "breathe" in water. They die in less than half a minute. So, I put the skinned pelts into a bucket with the same stuff and leave them submerged for about 10 minutes and then rinse them thoroughly. ALL ticks are dead. Still have to pick them off before fleshing but guaranteed none survive. Works better than spray or powders in a garbage bag and the fur comes out great, and the grease is not bad at all during fleshing. Towel dry before fleshing, after fleshing tumble in hardwood sawdust before boarding. Sure it may be overkill but wow, much better. For me at least. I'll start a thread about the slide-aways, I love 'em and I am SOLD on them.

Guess I needed to finish my message. First year trying to catch some coyotes. I have two locations im trapping for them. I got permission on four parcels, but only two of them are showing any sign of yotes. So I tried some pipe dream sets and that didnt pan out, but two of my flat sets have connected on a couple male pups. Caught the first one third day on a rock set, rock with sheeps wool tucked under the rock with stepenwolf 1 and a shot of red fox urine. Caught another one today on a bone set. That rain we got really slowed things up it seams, but hopeful of another cautch tommorrow.

Thanks Trappermac, looks like you have been at it awhile by your posts. I have trapped off and on threw the years, mostly off, but I have always enjoyed it when I do. Trapped fox when I was younger, born in 59, but its great messing with these coyotes and some of what I know, which is infantile, has been learned here on this site by you and others. Thank you for your contributions to a wounderful sport, its benefits to conservation and an historic American tradition.I am mostly a muzzleloader enthusisiast and hunter, ex fishing fanatic but enjoy all forms of predatory recreation. I took off the first two weeks of trapping season from work to engulf myself with trapping some coyotes and enjoying it minus some of the setbacks Iv had with being relatively green at it.Im trapping a few other furs as well for the creation of some primitive fur clothing.Been running about 12 canine sets plus a few coon and skunk sets. So far two coyotes, one red fox,two coon and a skunk. Fun stuff
