received my permit and carcass tags yesterday. My question is when will the DEC stop collecting jaws and carcasses ? I asked this question to the CO that tagged my last fisher, and she stated that, it will stop when the DEC runs out of freezer space. She said that where she submits jaws and carcasses, that the freezes are full of skulls and carcasses they have never looked at.

When did you apply? September 19th for me, still nuttin'... But it seems like it's the same every year. I wonder if Cuomo will sign an executive order demanding that trappers open up freezer space to the DEC if in fact they do run out? Or that there's now a 30-year waiting period on new trap purchases?

My guess is that the DEC will never stop requiring the skulls/carcasses be submitted as that's the only way DEC know of, to combat the black market fisher trade, and stop the marketing of Fisher pelts trapped after the season is closed. Not foolproof, but may(might) slow the fur pirates down a bit. Obviously though, you can't legislate honesty and following the trapping laws. w

Hi Tim-
I applied for my tags at the 2019 Cattaraugus County Sportsman Rendezvous (Aug 10). I inquired about the status yesterday and received a reply this morning;
"Yes, we did receive your Fisher Permit Application from the Cattaraugus County Rendezvous. Expect your permit to come in the mail by mid-October."
I wish they wouldn't wait until the last minute...it would save us trappers a little stress and save the NYSDEC time answering emails/phone calls on tag status.
Sorry I missed you this year in Herkimer...was not able to make the trip this year.
Good luck and take care, Dino

Hey Dino, I made it Thursday afternoon and Friday most of the day. I had to leave Friday right around 4 to "grampasit" my grandsons; hopefully next year they'll be able to join me. Got home after that, no water, thought the well pump was shot. Turns out the pump was ok, problem was somewhere in the wiring and the guys spent most of the day trying to locate the problem but no luck. Came back Sunday, different guy, found it in the first 10 minutes. So, I missed out on Saturday. Next year! Thanks for the heads-up on the permit! - Tim

I think that having to keep a log, get a special permit, and submitting skulls has gone much too far. How many years do they need to collect stuff. All they are really doing is adding additional burdens on the trappers because of the whim of a manager in Ray Brook. I'm a trapper, not an accountant, just to justify a college theory of "TPUE" which does not hold true. They do not listen to trapper input, think they know better because they have a degree. They twist things to their desires and ignore things like the St.Lawrence County study that proved a late season on fisher had no negative affect. Another brainstorm was to prohibit the use of bait with conibears after the close of fisher/marten season, to protect the marten,in areas where there are no marten, but srewing mink trappers. They consider me an old grouch, but I speak the truth and they know it. Just look at how long the Otter season has been closed in the Catskills and Mohawk Valley. Yes Sir, Sound Management, by a bunch that don't know the difference between an otter toilet and a blue Jay!

Sometimes there's blue jay remains IN otter toilets, so maybe they're just "confused."

Got my permit today. Only 2 tags so they must know I suck at fisher trapping. Al...they are asking for female fisher carcasses, not mandatory but you will receive a "cooperator patch"...just thought you'd like that...

Was sent an email last week that my tags were on the way.
On a different topic (venting), my daughter took her hunter safety course the other week...I went to town hall to pick up her tags so I could take her on the youth hunt this weekend (she has a lifetime sportsman)....I was told i needed to pay $15 (replacement cost) or wait two weeks for DEC to mail her tags...what’s up with that??? I can afford the $15 and trying to rationalize that the $ will go toward conservation but really??? I think that is lame..,unless I’m missing something. Wondering, Should I expect DEC to automatically mail tags following her successfully completing the course or do (did) I need to initiate the process? Also, again just wondering, what are the laminated lifetime cards for...and the lifetime hunting, fishing, trapping, boating, etc symbols I have on my new drivers license for (if for nothing, at least they were for free).
On a positive note, not much longer before the season starts! Good luck all, and be safe!

Never had a lifetime license Dino, so don't know about your daughters tags and why charged a processing fee. As for the icons on your license, if you have a lifetime license they put that on your drivers license and that becomes the only license you need to carry (besides the appropriate tags and/or permits). So lets say you're out trapping and a CO asks for your trapping license, you only need to present your drivers license...in their words.." makes your life easier". You could have had that done before your license was renewed for $15, or free upon your renewal. I only have the boating icon as I have taken the safe boating course.

Any fisher caught 2 weeks from tomorrow will most likely be blue. Not criticizing you, just again shows how the DEC has the season dates out of whack.

"Cooperator Patch"? It seems that the cooperation is very much one sided. I recall when they were looking for beaver meat for their fisher study. Over the years I have cooperated with all kinds of stuff, only to be ignored on a decent date for fisher season. The October season in the southern tier is a perfect example of the waste of a resource under the guise of "Trophy". There is no good reason why those "trophies" can't be harvested in December when they are prime. I could go on and on, but I for one, have had it. I will follow the regulations legally, but as far as cooperating with them, I'm done with their condescending attitude and one sidedness. There are a couple of very good men that I highly respect, but the manager running the fisher studies has lost all respect from me. Strictly a 9 to 5, Monday thru Friday person. Try to get him to a Saturday meeting on his own time? Ha. He can put that cooperator patch where the sun doesn't shine.

Just got mine in todays' mail. 5 generic possession tags plus 6 stamped, "MARTEN." Hopefully I can get some trapping done in 5H where we have a lot of land, last January/February while grouse hunting there was a great deal of marten sign.
