Not your run-of-the-mill kind. Two brothers (58 & 61) own a farm adjacent to my property. We'll call them 58 and 61; they're joint owners. I used to trap it when their father owned it but that was years ago. We've always been on good terms. Over the weekend I asked 58 about trapping, he asked me what I intended to trap. I said coyotes, fox, muskrat (a couple of nice ponds), mink, fisher, raccoon. He said sounds great, I just wish you'd leave the mouse-eaters, we've got too many mice, but sure go ahead. This afternoon I got a call from the other brother 61, screaming mad, trapping is cruel, no freakin (except he didn't say freakin) way he'd ever let anyone trap there, he thought I'd "outgrown that crap" (he didn't say crap lol), if he ever caught me in there trapping he'd shoot me. (He did say shoot lol!) So I called 58, apologized, well then he went nuts but over his brother. He says if it's ok with him, 61 can't say no. THEN I get a call from 61, 58 went nuts on him about it, long story short 61 and I are no longer on speaking terms, his words. With a lot of colorful words in his rant on me. I know the law, if both own it both have to be in agreement. I plan to set more than I should right along the common property line just out of spite, but - meh, IDK... How would you guys approach the situation? I'm disinclined to pursue repairing the relationship with 61 at this point, but I'm open to suggestions. It's about 350 acres, crop land, woods, ravines, streams, ponds, just great trapping. Anyways, if anyone's still on here, sound off. Thanks! - Tim

TMC, You're Screwed !! Unless the pond is deep enough to hide 61's body, I'd not touch it with a ten foot pole. Saturation trap the property line and wait for the spill over of migrating critters. Karma will bite 61 in the backside. w

Update: 58 was cultivating this morning, stopped when he saw me pull in at my place. He apologized for 61's behavior but also took responsibility himself, said he should've checked with 61 before telling me yes. He said 61 calmed down a bit, they sort of patched things up between them, all's good but sorry, it's a no to trapping. Hunting, well maybe. About 20 minutes ago I get a call, guess who? - 61. Apologizes for going off yesterday. Says he hopes I understand. Sure, no biggie sez I. Then he says he's going to talk to 58 about letting me hunt there, because they've both got kids and kids-in-law that hunt, they'd just work out times when I could. I thanked him and said no need, I have good hunting opportunities here at the farm and at home, just let the kids hunt all they want. Anyways, a lot more but mostly chit-chat after that. So all's well, but yeah, I think I'll carpet-bomb my eastern and southern property lines lol. Oh yeah, one more thing - I confirmed that the kids only hunt deer, no hunting with dogs. I think he got the hint of my intentions at that point! But all good.

Forget the revenge on the edge of that property. You need to be friendly neighbors. Find other places to trap.

Now, THAT would be revenge, Mark! lol! Paintedpaw, I wasn't thinking "revenge" as a motive for packing the property lines with traps. Re-reading what I wrote, it may seem like asking him about kid's hunting not involving dogs and him getting the hint may have been pushing it, but again what was in my mind was he realized that I'd be trapping up close to the line(s) and I do not want to present a hazard to dogs. Anyways, I've always been friendly toward them (even when they've bulldozed parts of my property lines to clear overgrown pasture land) and I don't see heavy trapping up against the line to be contrary to that. But I agree, I'm not now planning on making it so that it'd be noticeable to them. Matter of fact I harvested the scapes from my German Red and German White garlic patches on Saturday, 61's wife and 58's girlfriend love cooking with them so I'll be dropping off a couple of bags to each today. The brothers are next-door-neighbors, albeit about 1/4 mile apart lol. In a part of a deleted post above, it was mentioned something along the lines that with prevailing winds coming from west and northwest, it would be futile to trap the east and south lines of my property. Now, I've heard this all my (trapping) life too, but I have to say being out at night a LOT as a kid and as a young(er) man, the majority of the time the night breeze was out of the east-southeast. Daytime, when we're outside and active, sure it's primarily from west-northwest, in general. So, to me at least, it would seem since most critters we trap are on balance more nocturnal than diurnal, maybe the thinking should be revisited. Because for me, AT THAT FARM, night winds (don't go thinking flatulence, Bob! )are generally opposite prevailing daytime winds. And on my farm, it seems to have been proven out over the years. Nothing scientific about my observations, they're just my observations.

OK first, spur, I've always been a very good neighbor, I know what it's like when people trespass on MY property so I never, NEVER do it to them, and - honestly, I have no idea where your response is coming from but I do know I didn't give the impression I required such advice. Trapping UP TO the edge of my property is NOT trespass, "offense," or any other violation of any kind. Virtually any, and every, "offense" between "us neighbors" has been them against me, and I've always worked it out or just plain forgiven it entirely, and never once have I taken any of the legal recourse options available to me against them. And my mentioning/implying "revenge" of some sort was a poor attempt at humor, not an indicator of my intentions. Good enough of a peace-loving neighbor for ya? Good. Thanks, though. Anyways, where was I... oh yeah! So, I'm a the local tractor dealer, getting parts. 61 is there too, we start talking as soon as we see each other same as always, past is passed and we're good again. At some point he brings up about the episode, apologizes again, I assure him there's absolutely no need to apologize because whatever he says about his property is the final word and I respect and understand that. I also explain that my plans have changed slightly as most plans do over time, and I won't be setting as much along our line as I originally intended. He asked me again if I wanted to hunt there, I said no but thanks, plenty of deer here. "TOO MANY!!!," he said. "That's the reason I don't want any predators getting trapped, we need them for keeping down the mice and deer! I've never seen so many of both in my life!" Hmmm, thinks I to meself… And I ask him, "And how about the coyotes and fox? What about their numbers?" He thinks for a moment, rubbing his chin, then says, "Y'know, there's a TON more of THEM, too!" "So," I said, "how's it working out for coyotes and fox keeping down the mice and deer?" By then he was cashing out, we shook hands said adios etc. But before he left, he turned around and said, "Y'know, I may have to rethink this whole thing. I'll spend some time this weekend going over it with (58). We'll talk soon!"
So, just an update. Either way it works out is perfectly fine, but it's sure good to be back on good terms again. And far enough in advance of the season lol!
