Hello guys, new to trapping. I have been trapping a creek near my house for muskrats and mink with mostly bottom edge sets and have discovered what I believe to be a feed bed but it is on a rock that protrudes out of the water...I have found lots of muskrat droppings on it. Is there a good approach to trapping on a rock? I would assume you would be using footholds chained off to a rock or brick ect.. to drown them but I am just unsure of where I should place my trap... To give you a better idea it is only about a foot off shore and the rock itself is about 2 ft wide and 2ft long but only about a 6-8 inch flat section protrudes out of the water. Any advice would help. Also i have one more question about bottom edge sets on bridges. The water in the creek is not that high but when i put a 220 down on the edge of the bridge about 8 inches of water is still above it. Will muskrats and mink just swim over the trap and completely miss it or will i still get them? Should i put something like a patio block down under the 220 to raise it higher in the water column? Thanks!

If the water is shallow enough near the rock where it's evident where the rat is pulling up onto the rock, then yes a leghold set there and secured to allow it to drown would work. If deep water all around the rock just look at it as sign that there are rats around and find better locations. As for the bottom edge set, you should be on the bottom. I think the 220 is overkill for rats and mink, you'll miss some mink. Better off with 110, 150 size traps. I usually make some bottom edge sets along a wall, as well as a couple sets where the trap is half submerged or so to get those top water swimmers. Hope that helps.

Yeah I know that 220s are a bit much for muskrats and mink... The only reason I have one set is because there a ton of raccoons that travel this creek because there are freshwater clams in it... Thanks for the advice though I appreciate it!

I use 220’s for muskrats quite often. I sometimes just leave 1 spring hook on so I can reset it faster.
