Hello everyone and thanks in advance for any advise offered. I used to trap raccoon in the 80's to help pay for college and beer. Stopped trapping after fur prices bottomed, but now I have a Coyote problem at my deer camp so I am interested in getting started again. Just interested in catching Coyotes, everything else will be hunted as needed.
We always attached our coon traps to a buried tree root with a small plate and 3" deck screws. I hoped to do the same with my coyote sets, dirt hole or scent post with coil spring traps. They will be either in large hardwoods 4 wheeler lanes or edges of farm fields, both have plenty of trees to anchor to. Everything I have seen on line seems to be using rebar or cable anchors. I'm not opposed to buying a dozen cable anchors but I already have a screw gun and plates and they are my trees so no worry about damaging property.
I guess the question is, is it bad if the catch animal can get up close to the anchor tree stump maybe get wrapped around it or another tree close by? Will that give leverage to pull out of the trap?
part 2, I also need to by some basic tools again, scraper knife, sift box, (maybe some anchors ) any recommendations for good prices and fast shipping service would also be appreciated
Minnesota trapline supply is where I buy all my trapping gear...great to deal with...the real important thing for anchoring yote traps is swivels...theres no way id anchor to a root or tree as they tend to spin and circle ALOT when they are first caught, hence the name catch circle....and you don't want anything they can tangle up on...I go with 3 swivels on all my setups and I use 18 inch earth anchors made from #2 chain...Minnesota has them pre-fabed and welded
