Thought I'd share a bit of knowledge on set location. I used this trick back in the 1980s for fox. We didn't have any coyotes around then, but should work fine for them too. Fox, being heavily trapped back then, would often refuse sets made on the edge of a field. Seems everyone thought their sets had to be made in fields so fox would get wise to the set up. What I learned to do was to make my sets just inside the wood line off the field edge. I would approach from threw the woods and then pick a single lone tree of fair size. If possible chose a tree with an exposed root or roots growing up out of the ground at its base. Now stand on or just behind that root and make your set out in front of you. Ideally you want the set within 15 yds of the field and at this point you should be facing the field with the prevalling wind coming generally from your backs direction. Now make your set and if its a dirt hole set then make it so the hole is dug back toward you in other words make it backwards. The fox will usually be traveling that transition between field edge and wood line. If all gos well, the fox should find your set as the wind carries the smells to his noise from just up wind of his position. With a well constructed set, the fox should approach without circling the set because of tree and and other nearby fauna. The leaf litter rich soil that generally gos with these locations makes for easy bedding and covering of your trap as well as leaves a more undisturbed smell to the set. Make it quick and simple and leave some paw prints entering the set with the last print on the trap pan and you'll have the next fox that comes traveling that ecotone!
