Use nasty old hay if you use good feed hay you will be fighting the deer and bedding hay deer love to so if it's nasty they won't eat it hope this helps you out

Have you tried searching on craigslist? Not sure where you are but around here just type "hay" into the search box and >BAM!< like Emeril would say. Tons of results.
For the record, I've used hay that's fresh/new, mulch hay, and 30-year-old hay from an old barn loft that served as Cat Central... bedding, litter box, feeding station, you name it the cats did it in it and on it. They all caught fox. I had very few deer problems with the new bales.

Also, use hay, not straw. At least that's my two cents. I DO use straw BALES, much like the article in this month's Trapper's Post. Fox like a vantage point, I've used hay bales, straw bales, gravel mounds, ant hills, stumps and logs, rock piles... they all work. One thing I do not entirely agree with in that article is where the author states that a big(ger) bale is better, but in my opinion and experience, the smaller the elevated lookout point (within reason!!!), the more likely the foot is going where the trap is. I almost always use drags with the vantage point or mound set, or chain - GAH!!! I can't remember the word, maybe "go-aways?" Nope nope nope... dang it! Slide-aways, I think that's it. Darn brain injuries SUCK.
Anyways I hope that helps. - Tim

Try searching...
Zagger Flatiron hay stake
Chain sliders
Should give you a couple staking options.
Good luck

thanks for the info. i have to bales coming. looking forward to using them. the land i have to trap is not a wet land, but it is usually pretty wet. thinking a hay set where the traps lay on the ground would be ideal.

The chain sliders are nice for getting animals out of visible locations too, get them out of the laneway and into the hedgerow.
