Look on the bright side, the April 1 rainbow opener should be another good one....

the annual shocking is scheduled for the 19th I believe. Considering the entire creek and all of its feeders are frozen solid from high hills right down to confluence with West River end to end, there might be fewest fish in the creek ever for this event.

Glen is froze but main branch is open. I walked it Wednesday. Saw a nice female mink playing around. most ice will open this week. Last year they shocked 19 fish I think, run came and it was the best in 5-6 years. I'll be watching it daily starting next week and post updates. My offer to guide members here for free still stands. Ill put you on fish, guaranteed.

the main creek is frozen from above the 245 bridge all the way down to West River confluence. Very little water is open, and the shallow riffles are frozen right to gravel barring entry to the feeders. April 1st will be good, April 15ths and past May 1st even better for the really big fish

Until we get a good melting run off to bust the silt bars and break up those beaver dams below Parish Hill extension bridge, I agree the big fish wont run. I walked from 245 bridge to the main street bridge and it was starting to open up. Water was low, but open. most main holes were filled in from slow water sediment but we have the snow for cleaning them out, if it would just melt...
All the upper tribs are frozen over still The Glen always holds her ice to the bitter end, but thats typical.

main creek has filled in a lot of holes with gravel the past couple years. I heard Digger was graveled in last year following the May flood... hopefully it purged itself out since then

It has, last year it wasn't more than 2-3 feet deep instead of the usual 6-8 feet. its back to 4-5 feet at the falls but the length of the hole has been cut in half. The May floods last year were fish kill floods unfortunately. they stripped so much gravel and leaf litter from the creek that I doubt any fry survived and I know from my own experiences that the insect hatches last year were about non-existant. No leaf litter = no food for nymphs = no/small hatches = few fish. This thread has been officially hijacked.

I usually enjoy going after steelhead on Cattaraugus in March, that probably won't happen this year. Once the ice opens up the run-off is going to put the Cat out of commission probably through the entire spring steelhead season with the snowpack we have this year. Even during a normal winter thaw/run-off the fishable times are limited. Run-off is going to affect plenty of rainbow runs this year depending on snowpack, at least as far as fishable days.

The local weather forecast on two channels this morning said today's 50+ degree temps will be the warmest for rest of March. After this, back to 30s and 20s for the most part until April. Not looking favorable for a spring muskrat trip up north. Traps & gear are ready to go. The spots with ample muskrats to target are all lined up. Lined up, and locked up tight with snow and ice

We maple producers aren't faring any better... Some tubing runs are under 14' or more deep snowdrifts, and they've settled. I don't know if some sections will even be tapped this year.
As I'm often quoted as saying, even though I've adulterated the way it was told to me some years back: "When we take on Ma Nature as a business partner, we're getting a psychotic, sociopathic, BEE-otch with Tourette's!" Always unique, no repeat seasons. Or markets...

well, I'm going to try and prowl around up north the week before Easter Sunday, whether I'm setting a lot of traps or just scouting for next fall remains to be seen. Unless it's real cold and snowy, try to have a bit of fun there somehow.

Even down here in the southeast only the flowing creeks and rivers have opened. Lakes and ponds still locked up. I have a lake with 50 big rat houses not trapped yet ........screaming at me and it just won't melt!!!

I noticed two days in a row while trapping a lake. A muskrat comes out from a bank den. Goes out in a straight line about 100 yards turns around and goes back into the den. This happens every 15-30 minutes. Anyone know why? Don't see any food sources at least above water.

I was fishing for bullheads the other night and watched three different muskrats swim out from bank dens in the marsh, climb on land to gather dry leaves, and take them back into the den. all three are apparently females building nests, I would assume. no idea what the one you saw was up to

Caught my first bit up rat today. He was real messed up. Up until today, all the rats have been real big males that had real good leather with no bite marks. Season ends Tuesday so maybe I'll pull them all tomorrow.

Yeah I have no clue either on what it's doing but at least I got some nibbles on the carrots. Made some adjustments to the float. See what happens in the Am.

I would guess you muskrat is on patrol, keeping other rats away this time of year. I took a paddle on good friday and saw 6 muskrats and numerous birds and ducks. I missed a few, hope its enough seed for next fall.
