well all, i'm new to all this trapping stuff. also a deer hunter so i'm getting a late start on trapping i guess. So i went with a friend on his trap line today to see how he does things. he uses step down sets only. i defenitly see the pros and cons to that. but what i found weird is he faces the dog towards the critter not the hole. what are the pros and cons to this method? ? ps while checking his traps we got his 50 red fox. he also has 2 grays and 7 yotes, so it is working for him.

I used to always bed the trap with the dog toward my backing and away from where I think the critter should work the set. Now I pay more attention to how well the trap is bedded and blended. I really don't think it matters all that much.

I face the dog away from the bait hole. Loose jaw toward the hole for bedding and stable purposes.

Being new to trapping I attended my educational class this fall and the two instructors disagreed on this topic.
They both decided that proper concealment and stabilization of the trap was far more important than dog position.

Go dogless. But really, not even doing that ends the argument, lol!
