I braved the wintery weather today and was rewarded with this deer I shot from behind my house in Lancaster...I had to drag him quite a ways through 65 inches of snow! Thank goodness I brought my sled (I was worried I was going to jinx myself by bringing the sled). This was a big deer for me...check out the rub in the background of the second picture. Good luck!

Thanks for your congrats! Update following yesterday's PM hunt... Harvested a doe while a big buck was under my stand...a much easier drag back home as it was half the size of the earlier deer and my trail is beaten down pretty good. The pict of the buck is not the best but the video I took turned out great! My shot sound didn't event phase the buck who was busy digging for acorns...waited for 1/2 hour to leave my stand as I didn't want to scare the buck...hoping my brother will get a chance at him. Good luck! Doe dropped at the spot of impact; Home at last; Buck;

I'm surprised you had the energy to trudge out through all that snow after all the shoveling. Very nice buck. Freezer looks to be filling nicely!

Again, nice one Dino! I see where trappermac asked if you used a muzzleloader but I didn't see an answer. I noticed the possibles bag, too, but I carry one all the time whether hunting or not when I'll be outdoors working and a meal happens to fall during that time. Made it from a moosehide I barktanned using sumac. 'nother story, though!

Sorry...missed that question. Yes, it is my possibles bag but the deer was not shot with my Hawkens ML...I always carry the possibles bag...has everything I need to survive in the elements. I hunt behind my house...far cry from wilderness hunting but it gives me that special feeling knowing I have what I need just in case.
Colton and I hunted in our primitive attire with the ML from the ground on opening day but had no action...was still fun! I plan to use my ML during my PM hunt later today.
Tim, I'm sending you a PM regarding a tanning question. You got me inspired a while back to do some tanning...I have successfully bark tanned 4 deer hides and brain (egg) tanned 6 hides over the past year...lots of work!!! I learned something after each one I tanned; from shot placement (if you are that good) to smoking. Now I want to egg tan - fur on - a rat (first one Colton skinned all on his own), and a few small beavers.

lol, it is a cruel and insidious addiction: WHO in their right mind would work that hard to tan (especially brain tan - and I, too, generally only use eggs! But, I've begun experimenting with Ballistol, believe it or not ) a hide when they could put in 1/3,000 the effort at their occupation to garner the funds required to BUY that same hide?!?!?! lol!!! Fur/hair-on is a bit stickier, pun intended.

One more yesterday...and a snow beaver on a nuisance permit (note snow is up to my chest)! Going to have Colton take the lead on this deer...skin/butcher...the others are completed right down to the rib meat and in the freezer.
