When I set these traps and push pan down to hear the click of the night latch, I need to push the pan almost all the way down before the trap will spring (8 out of 12 are like this). Do you recommend that I file the knobby thing on the jaw or should I file the pan…or something else…or nothing at all...I do not want to ruin the trap. Any other tuning suggestions for these traps would be greatly appreciated! After catching my last animal in the trap, I lost some pan tension and could not keep the trap from springing when attempting to re-set…next time I will carry some tools. www.kbtrap.com/KB_Foot_Traps.htmlThanks, Dino

a few seasons ago I purchased sevral difrant brands of traps for comparisons MB550,MB650il,KB,bridger,montana the MB traps were ready right out of the box,as was the KB but I also was concerned with the amount of pan travel that was required to fire the KB after the night latch was set,had to be around 1/4"to3/8"before it would fire.I tried taking a file to mine it did shorten the travel distance but in return I created other isues by doing it.very hard to keep set now without cranking the pan tension way up,and lost the night latch.....I should have left the file alone hopefully you find a better way than mine good luck

Thanks for the info...I'm not going to do any more filing. I think I'll give the guys at KB a call and see what they recommend...I'll post an update.
Which of the traps did you like the best (and what were you using them to catch)? The Sterling traps look pretty solid although I have never used them.

ended up running 650IL for yotes seem to be a good trap for the $$,but they are not what I would call user friendly.can be a bear to set at times. the 550 on the other hand are very nice to work with, and a very solid trap for a mixed line. By no means am I try to diss KB's I bought 1, the pan travel was something that I was unsure of so I opted for the MB's. there are allot of guys running KB with great results. I plan on giving the jakes a run this year...good luck

Dont let the pan creep on the KBs bother you. It doesnt seem to bother a catch. I've been using them for yrs, as they are. So far, if the trap is fired, the animal is always there waiting for me

I love my KB's...it is day and night when I hold a KB next to one of my other K9 traps (#2 Bridger or 1.75 Victor). They are very solid and I love the built in shock adsorber...I have not lost an animal yet in a sprung trap.

The NEW Bridger #2 dogless will be direct competition for the KB....about the same size. Price will be a BIG factor and all 3 are NY legal
Bridger #2 dogless - $137 per dozen
KB 5.5 dogless - $250 per dozen (Made in Ft. Plain, NY)
Jakes - $375 per dozen
KB's and Jakes are time proven traps....the new Bridger dogless will have to prove itself. I will be buying a couple dozen of the new Bridgers to try. I already run the KB's and love them. I have a few Jakes and like them also

Unless you can weld yourself, add another $75-$100+ per dozen to the bridger for lams, swivels and shockspings.....just sayin

After 2 seasons of trapping I find myself reaching for the KB's over my MB550's both 2&4 coiled, and #3 SC. Love them and now get them bedded rock solid.

if i were to run just a yote line ide go jakes all the way. had one given to me and i love it sets and beds easy fires perfectly dogless and fires right through frozen dirt.once you tune it its pretty much there for the season.but i target fox more and i dont need that large of a trap.was messing with the idea of making my 1.75 bridgers dogless by copieing the jake.wish jc would do a smaller version would by them in a hartbeat.

If you get ahold of kurt the guy that makes the KB he will send you a new pan if you have issues no questions asked. Very nice guy. I too have had issues with the pan and still am. I think I need to draw the pan tension down some more. I've had decent luck with the 650 and 550 mb's keep your fingers away from the 650's though they are biters.
