Have a question about my SC #3 2-Coil Offsets. I have swivels and in-line shock springs on all 12 of them. Seems when I catch a red fox in one there is always foot/leg damage. I assume chewing? Would laminating help and would they need to 4 coiled? Any thoughts? Thank you.

In my lifetime of trapping canines I think I may have had 4 total that have chewed on their foot...Are you sure its not sharp edges on the jaws causing damage?? If yes then lams will help solve that issue.

^--- Agreed. Every new trap gets an inspection of the inside jaw edges and if sharp or too much of an edge, I chamfer and smooth them out. That completely eliminates all damage in my own experience. Lam's would certainly help fix it, I just prefer filing the edges especially since I'm tuning them anyhow (pan tension, etc.).

The #3 sleepy creek has a forged offset on the jaws which makes a squared edge on the jaws. If you are worried about foot damage, its a good idea to file the edges to round them a little. The trap is heavy for fox so it doesn't help prevent foot damage. Laminating will help but it wont completely stop damage.

I have no issues using heavy iron as long as the traps are laminated...

I have some SC #3s and I agree with tmc.. I file all edges and then go over that with sand paper. I laminate them as well. Inside lams may help better than outside. Mine are 4 coiled. I 4 coil everything.. Coyote/fox wise.. If I want to, I can always pop off the helpers.

I do believe you know I'd never be anything but joking about it. If I were you, I'd never give that stuff another thought. It's not who you are. It's just what comes out. ..oops, that doesn't sound right! I'm wondering though if a tumbler wouldn't "wear" parts of the jaws that you wouldn't want to be any less than they are, like where they attach to the frame. I'm probably not looking at this right, but for the time and expense I'll stick with just using files and emery cloth. I do think that the parts would come out looking great, though. Just not sure it'd be worthwhile? >clink!clink!< <---two cents deposited.

I'm pretty sure that if you were only two foot tall you'd still be a bigger man than most. To paraphrase the line in the last Rocky movie (the best one): "It's not about how hard you can hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep on going." You da man. Now back on topic: um, what was the topic? lol!
