This may be a question for papabear but I hope anyone with the answer will chime in. I wanted to make a half gallon of coon bait using a thick egg base and read about how to make it and was wondering what oils or such can be used to add scent to it like anise or shellfish oil? Also would this be a good fox paste type bait?

Once again papa bear....."thank you".....and I read that this will not need sodium benzoate to preserve, but would it hurt to add some to be safe? Dale

Dear Friend, I would agree that sodium benzoate isn't necesary. Eggs are naturally high in vitamin E which has preserving property's. As eggs start to ferment they tend to emit a foul, almost sulfur odor but over a course of time the odor changes to a musky, almost sweet odor. I'm sure because of the natural vitamin e and fat content they tend to preserve themselves.......Additives like honey would also serve to preserve the concoction as honey has mild preserving qualities......ingredients such as castor, tonquin, or civet are great enhancers and would serve duty as a fixative.....Regards

Dear Friend, a usable formula; in a clean 1/2 gallon jar 4 oz 100 proof vodka 4 oz glycerin 1 quart fermented eggs (aged at least 6 month's) 2 oz ground beaver oil sac ( preserved fresh in salt) 1/2 oz tonquin OR civet (tonquin from Nightowl or Blackies Blend, civet from J.R.& Sons or Dobbins) Fill remainder of jar with 1/2 honey and 1/2 fish oil Mix well and age for a couple months Regards

I always add something sweet to The mix.I use eggs for skunks But to the mix I would add butterscotch or some honey to it When I want to catch both. Works very well here in WI.
