So, one day while bored and in a creative state of mind, I decided to whip up some coon bait (couldn't even trap, but I wanted bait for when I could). Here's what I threw together along with rough measurements. I'll include a pic of the stuff later:
Cat food, dry and wet: about half a cup dry, spoonful wet cooking grease: 3/4 cup, with scrapings from the bottom of the pan peanut butter: 2-3 heaping Tbsp (doesn't matter which, I used chunky) Jelly: 1 Tbsp quick oats: just enough to thicken it up Honey and syrup: Generous amounts of each, about 1 tbsp of honey and 2-3 of syrup
Mixed that stuff together and stuck it in a jar. It now resides on the top of my mom's kitchen cabinets lol you can use it if you like, I've been meaning to test it for this season.

Here's the pic I owe you guys. It looks like cat/dog barf but it reeks of peanut butter. Slightly chunky, the dry cat food is surprisingly solid (not soft or mushy) after months of being in an oily mess. Guess the oats kept the excess oil out of them. I also made an oil mixture to be used as a lure out of fruit scented oils with a filler of corn oil. Just to put on wool or on a stick as mild lure in certain areas; the peanut butter is plenty strong. Attachments:

Here is another concoction I just came up with, and just finished. It's a mix of the quick oats I'm becoming fond of using (we have plenty of it, it just sits there in the cabinet untouched for MONTHS), cooking grease (also something that has been sitting there for a few days, it's been used for cooking at least twice), some old overly salted popcorn I rejected and left in the fridge, some peanut butter, honey, and some crunchy crumbs from a leftover box of Popeye's chicken. Mix well and viola, you have a coon treat with plenty of gravy to drizzle on the trap and plenty of grabbings to get the coon in your trap and in your fur shed. (Rofl that sounds like an ad XD) Anyway, I hope you guys are enjoying my recipes for the garbage disposals we call raccoons. I love experimenting and I love cooking (in this case cooking for coons). Once trapping season comes, I'll put my baits to the test and let you guys know which leftovers win the coons over the most. I'll post other recipes/concoctions as I make them. Attachments:

great way to spend the off season!!!!! have you developed any effective "dry" type baits to use with DP's (dry baits much more convenient when using DP's)?

Silver, I've been thinking about that "dry" coon bait you wanted, and I have an idea that might work well. I'll work on it after dinner and post it up for you, complete with pics and approx. measurements.

Think I figured out that dry bait: make a sticky batter of cooking grease (best after 2-3 uses ), honey/syrup (an egg could be used as well, but that's optional) and some flour (should be thick, get the clumps out!), dip the previously mentioned popcorn in it (1 or many at a time, you decide) and fry them in old cooking grease that you would otherwise toss. Try keeping as much oil in them as possible, I doubt the coon's will mind I'll test it tomorrow when people aren't sleeping, frying oil tends to be loud in a quiet house, er, apartment lol

Do you have a trail camera? If you do, put out some of your bait and see who likes it. Put some out where you will be setting in the fall. Have fun.

I agree Silver!!! And I don't have one Doug, but if I did I would definitely try it out that way! If anyone else has a trail cam, I would greatly appreciate if they would test some of the baits!

Okay, so Life decided to stop by for the last few days and kept me from giving you the recipe I owe you guys. I'm making the bait right now, it's kind of like little coon fritters. XD I'll post pictures once I stop burning everything and stinking up the house. (Mom wasn't too pleased with the smell, lol) What you'll need (more in proportion): 2 units of flour 1/2-1/3 unit of used cooking grease, same for honey or syrup 1, 2 or 3 eggs, depending on how much you make Make into a dough (cookie dough consistency, it should be slightly sticky/oily, but you can dry it up if you like with some more flour) Place mini marshmallows, popcorn bait, or any other small bait in the dough and mix it in well (optional). Spoon out small pieces and deep fry on high heat for a few minutes until a nice golden brown. It may still be gooey on the inside, but that's okay. It will also expand if it absorbs the oil in the pot/pan (this usually doesn't happen if you place it in from the start while the oil is really hot, and keep it that way throughout the cooking). You can always cut it down to size when it's cooled. Careful of the smell (the grease is to blame for this) and enjoy your "dry" bait!! By the way, I am aware that this recipe is rather unnecessary as coons aren't picky, but it sure does pass the time and allows use of otherwise discarded food during the off season.

P.S.: You can also bake them.

im sure it will work great!!! yes coons are not very picky however making your own bait/ lures using them on your line and catching critters just adds to the whole "experience" and generates a larger sense of pride!!! thanks fo the recipe!!
