currently i use an 8" PVC pipe split/ made into fleshing beam, works great!!!! would like to diversify and add a wooden fleshing beam to my arsenal, i believe basswood seems to be the wood of choice but my question is, any other type of wood out there that makes a good beam, i plan on cutting from my property to make one, ive got maple, ash, beech, cherry, and cedar for choices, (theres some pine as well but...) or does it not really matter? (red cedar not white btw) thanks for any input in advance!!

also remember that it will be a lot of work the harder the wood to form the shape.

also remember that it will be a lot of work the harder the wood to form the shape. yessir im expecting some "labor" but it'll give me a summer project "labor of love", gonna try to match the curve/contour of my 12" fleshing knife, get some close to full width "swipes" when fleshing hopefully
