OK I have a few rat pelts left over from the late winter last season.I had no rat stretchers ,so I made my own from wire. Now that I purchased some real wire stretchers,I noticed a big difference in the shape ,mostly width of my home made ones to the others.I just read an article in the trappers post ,"bigger isn't always better".They claim that the rats are scanned now by the big auction houses, and its more of a matter of Sq inches then the over all length. My question ,is it possible to soak those pelts in water to soften them up ,re stretch on the wire stretchers then dry again without ruining them? The pelts were frozen all summer ,no yellowing of the leather ,so to me they seem to be in good shape.

fur byers use to do it all the time when they bought misalined rats. be sure to use cool water or hair will slip.
