They swim with their head barely above the water after getting hit until they can get someplace for cover. It's happened to me before, you can't do anything other than give it your best attempt to find it. Just make sure you include it in your daily limit.
My budy shot one last year and it landed right next to me laying motionless mouth open wings spread. more bird were comeing so i left it.10 min later the action slowed down and i went to retreve the bird and it was gone. After wadeing through the marsh for 250 yards i found him trying to hide in some thick bushes. It took forever and like any other wild animal they have a strong will to survive
We had one a couple years ago that the dogs had retrieved, and had been laying in the blind for almost an hour. We stepped out of the blind to start gathering our gear, and that goose (who we later named Lazarus)got up, and went out the back side of the blind and was headed for the river. My fiancé spotted it, and called the dogs over to get it back......again. The poor dogs had no idea what in the world was going on. We hadn't shot, so why was there a goose running around on the river bank? For that matter, why were we interrupting their play time when they had been such good pups all morning?
Wild critters, are programmed to survive. How many of you have tracked a deer on solid blood for much farther than you thought you might? My Archery deer this year made it 70 yards after a muzzy transected it's heart. The resilience of animals we pursue can never be understated, and moreover should never be underestimated.
