Anybody know why there seems to be a borax shortage? I've been to the places that usually carry it, and the shelves are empty. Tried 2 different Walmarts, a few grocery stores, etc.

Gonna be at Wal-mart later. I'll let you know if I score some. Weis markets in Broome County usually have it too.

Myself and my partner empty the shelves everytime we find borax. All the furs and hides I ship to Moyle are completely rubbed down with borax before drying. I borax faces , tails, and under arm areas on all other furs. If I have green belly areas, even though they are fleshed off, I rub the borax into those areas. By buying all the borax on the shelf, you are creating a demand for that product, and more is ordered for restocking, or at least it is listed as a regularly sold product and is stocked accordingly. Other than trappers and taxidermist look for borax on the shelf, you have to get there before the Amish women, they empty the shelves when they find it, they use it in thier laundry. As mentioned, Wal-Mart is the best place to find it here in our area, and stocking up now will prevent you from running out in the middle of season and not being able to get more. When I use borax I have a catch system so I can reuse it. I brush the borax off the hides and furs with a stiff paint brush when dried, capturing the excess borax. If you open a box and it is solid or lumpy it can be easily crumbled to the fine grained state for use on your furs. A friend of mine who handles alot of foxes, rubs his foxes down completely with borax after fleshing and boards them fur side out to dry, not having to monkey around turning fur.Just another persons way of using borax.

I know that stuff seems to be hard to find at times. Usually nothing in Wal-Mart around here but we find it in little mom&pops. MB

I just priced borax from VanDykes, a 50LB box of borax is $63.20, that's $1.264/LB. Parcal Post costs for 50LBS from VanDykes to Ilion NY is $26.80. Parcal Post is the cheapest way to ship, and the cost will be more than $26.80 because the weight of the box is not included, neither is VanDykes handling charge. Just using the $63.20 cost and the $26.80 shipping added together, you get $90.00 divided by 50LBS making a pound of borax costing $1.80/LB. That 4.75LB box of borax at Wal-Mart would cost $8.55. My partner just bought five 4.75LB boxes of borax at the Herkimer Wal-Mart for less than $20.00, and that includes tax. Somtimes we can only get one or two boxes and other times I have bought as many as twelve boxes but by trapping season, not counting my partner, I usually have more than 100LBS on hand. We just look for borax everytime we go to Wal-Mart.

Wow.....so I am spending more? Who the heck figures SHIPPING into the cost of something? LOL I guess for me, just convenient to buy before season in bulk and not worry about running all over looking for it.... If you DO buy from Van Dykes...get the powder Borax, not the granular. The powder sticks to the leather far better. BTW, does ANYONE even use 20 Mule Team Borax for laundry??? Remember the old commercials from the 70's, when that little toy-sized mule team comes flying around the corner in the laundry room with the mule team driver whipping and screaming at the mules? Or was that Chuckwagon Dog Food??? Gosh, I'm old.
