Rick, Heard that Red Fox tanked, 15.00 avg............. I handled a fair number of finished reds from auction table to buyer bins... I saw a lot of good fox sell for $30s to $40s and a few bidding wars took some selects to $50+ if the average was in teens, I did not see all the $10 fox it would have taken to kill the high end. The sale lasted eight hours from my check-in to my sale, I wasn't there the whole time so cannot say for sure

Austin, my calculations say that you grossed at least $360 more at GVTA Sunday than you would have gotten at NAFA yesterday.

Austin, my calculations say that you grossed at least $360 more at GVTA Sunday than you would have gotten at NAFA yesterday. That's fur buyer math John! lol. You know as well as I, your comparing apples to oranges. You don't know what grades or lots he would have gotten at NAFA.

AJ, you are entirely correct. I have no clue what grades he would have received at NAFA. There's no way to ever know how they are going to grade up there. However, I am not comparing apples to oranges. I sent 20 matched red foxes once and had them in 13 different grades so I'm sure the same thing can and does happen with rats. However, I did see his rats, I know how they SHOULD have graded, and honestly believe he did at least that much better at GVTA. I did not buy his rats, only helped them get to the price received so I have no stake in this but only making an honest observation. IMHO I think Austin did well by selling where, how and when he did. Timing is everything and sometimes it is best to be the lower bidder and not buy the goods, too ;D

I think everyone did well at the local auctions this year. It's a great resource to the trappers. But, it's hard, near impossible to compare them to the Auction Houses.

Austin, my calculations say that you grossed at least $360 more at GVTA Sunday than you would have gotten at NAFA yesterday. Knowing my own furs firsthand, I happen to believe that's true. Regardless of a few hundred dollars in my favor or against, I'm perfectly content to have sold where I did. Next year I'll be back at the local auctions, whether I have 25 rats or 2,500 rats for the season

Comparisons are difficult to draw between any of the legitimate outlets for our hard earned goods. The prices given and received at any auction or from any individual reflect the value of the goods at that particular moment in time only. All outlets are necessary to provide fair competition in the marketplace. The more outlets, the higher the competition, the more fair the prices. Eliminate any level of the fur trade and the whole industry comes closer to becoming monopolized and controled by a few.
