Tupper Lake Convention was under tents. It rained so bad that dealer supplies were sitting in up to a foot of water, yet not one dealer complained.

I was only 10 years old and it was my first convention,Wasn't enough rain to dampen the spirits of this young trapper.

I remember Gary Parsons, the former (now retired) DEC Bureau of Fish and Wildlife Chief. He was the Big Boss in Albany when I was a Seasonal Wildlife Tech in Bath NY in the early 1980's.
I believe Ben Tullar was also with the DEC, and I think ( can't remember) he was a Furbearer Specialist Biologist around the same time.

Correct on both counts. As for Mr.Mole's memories I never was at E.J. Dailey's, but I did sell furs to Glen Rowe at Johnny Thorpe's place. I too remember just a northern and southern zone. I believe Rt.29 was the dividing line. I also trapped for bounty and the town clerk where I took them. I don't recall the Spring only Beaver season, wish it was that way now. I do recall getting "a dollar an inch" for beaver. Also remember that beaver were stretched round, not oval, coon were stretched quite wide, and fisher were put up fur side in.

I also recall in 1979 and 1980 the Local Country Fur Buyers in and around Canandaigua, N.Y. wanted Raccoon stretched VERY NARROW, like ONLY 5 1/2" to 6" INCHES WIDE. We were scrambling to stretch them on fox boards or wiring our Big Coon stretchers down to that ridiculously narrow stretch. It stayed that way for 3 or four years and then went back to normal. walleyed

How bout' Toby guarding the Spring beaver sales at Old Forge ? or those anti's signs mysteriously catching fire at the NYSTA convention in Canandaigua ? Walleyed , yep , a three year span --------------coon as long and as narrow as ya could get em' . Went for a hair cut yesterday and really noticed how theres more gray falling on each trip ! Von

You ARE starting to look pretty "experienced" my friend ;D However, I can remember much of that as well; along with many other things I'm sure some of us share in common. How about that truck parked at Piseco Lake at the convention that said "Horseshoeing" on the side of it with that young fella in cowboy boots and a cowboy hat sitting on the tailgate ?

Hey Von I do remember Toby guarding the fur at Old Forge. He invited me to come inside, but I remember preferring to sleeping in the back of my truck rather than in with the furs and fleas. Six inches of snow on the cap next morning. I remember having breakfast with Johnny Thorpe and John Magel up there. As for your hair turning gray be glad you've got hair. Been thinkin of savin a small beaver and having a rug made! By the way I have a picture of Bob Hughes when he had hair!!! The Adirondack Trappers Association used to meet at a restaurant in Tupper Lake. A forest ranger named Ed Reed headed the group. I used to drive 90 miles one way to attend meetings. I also remember other forest rangers at Old Forge and Inlet that were excellant trappers. Does anyone remember a trapper from Blue Mountain named Cummins? How about that girl trapper from Lewey Lake? Can't remember her last name, first name was Diane. She moved to Gloversville and for a while she and her boyfriend sold B and D lures>

Here is another one. Does anyone remember Wayne Kingsley, a fur buyer from Vermont? He would come right to your house, but was very religous and would never come to a sale on a sunday.
Also Walter Trotsky. He used to tailgate at the conventions, bought my first can of trap dip from him, long before Andy Stowe sold any. I believe he was from Rhode Island.

I remember Lovel Cummings, a gentleman always had a twinkle in his eye, his son Joe trapped around the cedar river when I was running up there. The woman I remember was Helen Whitford always carried a piece ,I knew John Rockwood before he got so vain with highlighting his hair to silver, I'am gettin' more forehead to wash but I don't have to spend as much time brushin' my tooth----------It's a good time to be a trapper!-Tom

AND IT IS DEFINATLY A HELL OF A TIME TO BE A TRAPPER.

What's the story with "Slivers"? He didn't happen to be a skinny fella from McDonough in Chenengo County, was he?

What's the story with "Slivers"? He didn't happen to be a skinny fella from McDonough in Chenengo County, was he? He was a musician that used to play at the conventions , how many remember the ho-downs on Sat. nite ? I reckon Frances nearly started a riot at the Clayton convention because Slivers was a bit drunk and quit early . Conventions in those days were more of a family affair , the wives and kids were always there . Al, I'll trade some hair fer sum teeth ! Actually , I'm shopping fer sum but I want two sets and no one wants to make me a set w/ k-9 fangs fer the weekend ! ;D Blackie , Old Man and I slept w/ the furs and Blackie had to use the John ------------ found himself looking down Toby's shotgun barrel ! I miss some of those old times , White Mountain ? thoughts of jawing w/ Bob Freeman , Charlie Dobbins and watching Ludy Sheda auction off anything he could get his hands on !

That would be Walter Strokey not "Trotsky". Lol. Yes he was a furbuyer in northern RI. A little story...I was working on a pheasant hunting preserve in northern RI when I was in college. Walt used to trap the farm. I had asked if he would mind if I made some sets and he freaked out on me saying it was his place and under no circumstances could I set traps, quote "I will kill you and put you in a hole where they'll never find you".... Well one night after consuming adult beverages with the other farm hands they "convinced" me to make some sets around the farm (in the dark, inebriated, using a headlamp). I remember waking up hungover and thinking did I really do that last night? Needless to say I ran those traps in the dark of morning with a bad hangover pulling them as I went. No catches were made....just memories.

Thank you oldeman; could not remember the Galusha name. I know exactly where those cabins are at the south end of Lewey Lake. Von, I'm afraid I can't help you with the teeth; only have two of my own, been wearing falsies for years. Perhaps I'll just let my eyebrows grow and comb them back I too remember Helen Whitford from the Piseco Lake days, if my memory is correct she collected old guide buttons. Also White Mountain Lures. Always glad to run into Bob Freeman and his lovely wife. I can remember being impressed with all of the foxes at the Cummins place. They used to have a bunch of cabins at the foot of the trail up Blue Mountain, almost across from the Blue Mountain Lake Museum. Anyone remember Doc Greene spinning his motorcycle on the dance floor at the Cobleskill Fur Takers Convention? Was glad to run into Oscar Cronk a couple years back, have been up to his shop in Maine. Anyone remember the auctioneering off of the trap stakes at the conventions years ago? Kinda like the case of beer these days. Well I'm not rich, but I've got a head full of great memories. Many, many wonderful friends through trapping. And you are right Tom..... It is a good time to be a trapper!!

White Mountain? Were they from Constableville? Don't remember the guys name but I was there with Bob Winters about 20 to 23 years ago when I was around 10. He had live fox in the garage for urine and gave me a demo in the back yard about making a dirt hole for coyotes.

I believe Constabillville was the location. Bob Freeman owned it. Great guy! Bought out by Toby Edwards, but I don't think Toby markets these lures any more.
