I cought an otter today in a channel set for beavers.. I have never even seen one befor today!!! I guess it was a real big one from what the DEC CO said to me.. I asked if I could keep it to donate it to the local fish hatchery- I sure hope they will work it out for me!!! It would be AWESOME for them to have!!!! I cought this in Onondage county- local towns would be Marcellus or Skaneateles.. Attachments:

Nice catch and while it's too bad you couldn't keep him...great to see trappers doing the right thing Maybe someday a season will be an option for your area

A lot has been learned since the otter deal took place and we are still dealing with the effects of that today.

For one thing ,and this is just my opinion,we got involved with groups that maybe we shouldnt have. There already were otters in the restoration areas before the big otter project. It would have been much better if the restoration to place more or less on is own like what is now taking place with the fisher and bobcat and other spieces before them.As condititions change in the lay of the land the animals do a good job of filling it on their own without the need of do gooders.

Jerry-- do you hear of many incidental otter in conibears in Saratoga ? Seems like if alot of trappers were reporting them in the altered trigger 330's that something would have to be done about it.

i trap in schoharie county. i turned my first otter into dec. they would not return it to me. i told them i would pay for the tanning and the shipping if they would donate it to the local rod and gun club. i got the big NOPE on that one. they send it to cornell where they did there tests and threw the rest over a bank somewhere. i was told otters are not present in schoharie county. i know how you feel

I witnessed 2 otter here in Camillus on Ninemile Creek, hunting around, eating all the 9" newly stocked brown trout Carpenters Brook hatchery just dumped in...
there were also a bunch of slob fisherman following the same truck around catching way over their limit of these freshly released liver pellet fed pet fish. Right behind the fisherman was a DEC Officer with ticket book in hand....quite predictable & comical to watch..
Didn't see the ECO's issue any tickets to the otter though..

According to Gordon Batchelor a "fisher plan" and "otter plan" will follow the bobcat plan. Things may begin to change.
